Anyone who believes that a major league ballplayer doesn't know when the bat he is holding is 1 to 1.5 ounces lighter than his regular bats is naive.

As a Chicagoan I should probably side with Sosa, except he's a liar and a cheat. I am an American and I didn't support a liar and a cheat in the White House for 8 years, why start now?
To: Howlin
He was very well coached with plenty of time to practice.

I'll bet this kid has a couple of autographed baseballs in his bedroom that are covered with the saliva of the pitchers who signed them, too.

The league wants Sosa playing in the Yankee series. It's one of their very few sexy inter league, big market match ups.

>>>I liked the original I heard -- one month! That's roughly 25 games. Works for me.

I don't understand what the big deal is about this Sosa corked bat thing (baseball is literally nothing more than how we pass the time to NFL training camp), when the really important question is why the NHL continues to allow Anaheim goaltender JS Giguere to continue to wear illegal pads that look something like this:

Put the cork on the fork, Ruprecht.

I too have been listening to some experts regarding cork bats...and they all have stated that YOU CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE just by picking up the bat. Sammy should have just said he made a mistake in judgment and moved on.

But...but ....he said he was sorry.....and he's soooo popular. Look at the "good" he does. < /sarcasm >
I guess his superstitions didn't help him out this time. Wish they'd banned him for the year.

He is in a serious funk at the plate.
Yup, he sure is. I heard one sports head propose the "funk" as motivation for going to ole corky.
The guy said until the middle of last season or so, Sosa was smackin' dingers at about 1 per 12 at bats pace....since then he's at a 1 per 21 rate.
As the saying goes..."Chicks (and the league, fans, and TV) dig the long ball".

Here's the sequence of events:
MLB institutes a new steroids law effective this year. Sammy suddenly seems smaller and the bat strength has waned.
An errant throw shatters his batting helmet and later he ends up on the DL with a bum toe. These factors put him in a terrible slump. Now he's got additional problems beyond his declinig physique. Now he's got internal demons to contend with.
So what's the poor young man to do?
Why don't I try a bat with cork in it to get me out of my hitting slump?
He was also smart enough to have a cover story so that when the bat broke, he could immediately implement it at a press conference after the game. Nice PR move to get his response out there on the same day as the incident so that the story wasn't needlessly prolonged and hyped prior to his reaction.
All calculated. All lies. All the time.

Hey people, he's a Cub. It's not like it's going to affect the playoffs, or anything. Kind of a silly statement considering the Cubs are in first place playing the Yankees who are a game or so in back of Boston. Games count just as much in June as they do in September.

Sammy Sosa Suspended for 8 Games; Will AppealWhat is that... like... a one week's vacation?
To: Alberta's Child
That's exactly the case. He'll drop the appeal Sunday evening. Sosa is a 100% PR guy.
