GUN BAN IN CITY PARKS ISSUE FOR LEGISLATURE

by the Tri-City Herald Editorial Staff

Admittedly, Pasco's short-lived ban on carrying guns in city parks seems a little like a solution in search of a problem.

Memorial Park isn't likely to turn into the OK Corral just because the Pasco City Council rescinded the ordinance. After all, before the ban was enacted in April, there didn't seem to be many Wyatt Earp wannabes strapping on six-shooters to promenade along the shady paths.

Even so, the idea of keeping guns out of city parks is so logical that the Legislature ought to make the simple alteration to state law that would allow the restriction.......

why on earth would anyone need a concealed gun in a city park?

don't they know there are children there?

what? are they expecting to shoot the ducks there?

all we're asking is some reasonable common sense statist control.

come on folks, give it up for your masters.

"The wisdom of banning guns from schools is obvious to most of us, certainly to anyone who has recently witnessed the chaos called recess."

What on earth kind of statement is THAT? Do they think the students are going to be carrying concealed weapons...or that the teachers are going to pull guns on unruly kids?

I still say the most UNSAFE I feel is the places where I know NO ONE is allowed to carry a concealed weapon, i.e. schools and bars.

Agreed. That's why I've had to avoid public gatherings except for the America Rally in Centennial Park last March. I wasn't carrying there, for obvious reasons, but I still had my pepper spray on me.

The sad thing is, most folks licensed to carry concealed *DO* have common sense - criminals don't. That's what makes "no carry zones" scary.

>>But within that liberal framework, state lawmakers have passed some limits on gun rights. In certain cases, the need for public safety has outweighed individual rights. Those include a prohibition on firearms in courthouses, public mental health facilities, stadiums, convention centers, places that sell alcohol, schools and school buses. <<

Courthouses...where unhappy criminals are, and lots of cops too.

mental health facilities...A lockdown area with little access to weapons at all.

Stadiums, convention centers...places that if used, even in self defense, the potential for injuring bystanders is high.

Any place serving alcohol...uh duh!

Schools and CCW permit holding staff and parents...to me, that's a hard sell.

Parks...Are parks bristling with cops and unhappy criminals. (remember, the criminals have to be unhappy) Would parks be weapon free, or just legal weapon free? Are they so crowded that there is a high probability of innocents being hurt? Has the park been a place where they sell wine and beer?

Would the city council take responsiblity for a rape, if a woman was not able to defend herself with her weapon? Of course not. Are they going to start searching people before entry, or is it just law abiding CCW permit holders that are expected to follow the "law".

Liberal cities always want to infringe on this right. Thank goodness the state constitution preempted them.

That hits the nail right on the head. Prohibiting legal carry where more than 50% of an establishment's business comes from alcohol consumption, crowded events (stadiums), etc. fall under "common sense."

Your statement is precisely what bothers me. If a location is designated "no-carry," that's like advertising to the "bad guys" that anyone there is "easy pickin's." I try to avoid these places as much as possible.
