23 people - and one goat - spill out of overloaded taxi
by SHARIKA REGCHAND
A minibus taxi carrying 17 adults, six children and a goat was impounded in Commercial Road on Saturday.
Senior Provincial Traffic Inspector Zain Mahomed said traffic officials stopped the taxi, which was en route to the Transkei, when they noticed that the sliding door was not closed properly.
He said a passenger was sitting on top of luggage and holding a goat with its head sticking out of the door.
The taxi was impounded and taken to the Mkondeni testing grounds where it was found to be unroadworthy.
The driver, who has been charged for overloading, had to make alternative arrangements for the passengers to continue their journey.

That is a high people-to-goat ratio.

I was riding a packed bus in Nepal with about 60 people headed down from the high Himalayas into Kathmandu for a festival. The slaughter of a goat for this festival was highly desired, so a shepherd loaded his flock of about 40 goats into the aisle of the already full bus.
Needless to say, we were quite crowded. One goat in particular was jammed up against my right knee for the whole ride.
When we reached a suburb where the goats were marketable at a good price, the shepherd unloaded his flock.
Except for that one goat by me. The neck pressed against my knee had cut off all circulation, and when decompressed, the goat fell over dead.
The bus was still terribly crowded, so we grabbed the goat, passed it overhead, and threw it out the window.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

When Trivial Pursuits adds the question of how many South Africans and goats you can fit in a taxi, I'll be ready with the answer.

Very common in Arab lands to see Pa driving the pick-up, invariably a white Toyota King Cab, with sheep and goats in the cab, while Moms and the kids sit in the bed.
Back in the g.o.d., when Saudi Arabia was a wealthy country, a Saudi national could have a brand new Toyota truck just for the asking. Since the native head thing cuts peripheral vision, they had accidents in which the human and animal casualties can be scattered quite a ways. In fact there is a white Totota Pickup junkyard out in the desert near Riyadh which must cover 500 acres. Survivors of these horrible wrecks would just leave the wreckage where it lay and go back to City Hall for another truck.
Popular accessory is the camel hoist, for lifting the beast in and out of the truck bed. The camel is usually on his way to serve as guest of honor and main course at a desert barbecue. On these festive occasions, Moms and the kids may be permitted, by Shari'a law, to ride in the cab with Pa. BTW, Camel is pretty good. As soon as our local Somalis get organized, I expect it will be on the bill of fare here in Maine.

I wish we could send these third world nations a couple of dozen used car dealers that pollute our airwaves here in NE Oklahoma.
