I guess his "respect for the Constitution" evolved sometime after he supported lynching.

Absolutely right, it is unkind to criticize a pathetic old man who is obviously senile.

Nobody has yet shown how Byrd would want to don his KKK mask again. The last frame of the cartoon is not set in the past. It is set in the future.

Do you seriously believe that?

So, which one of your senators carries around a copy of the constitution? Can you name a congressman or senator that can debate the intricacies of the Federalist Papers?

Which senator was the only one on either side to speak out against the "Patriot Act"?

Now that Lady Bird Johnson is no longer buying green bananas, she requests one last time to be able to Beautify America. She wants to personally put a paper bag over Hilary's head.

Good one. It'd be outrageously funny if it weren't so true!

"Just line up the eyeholes (and shut yer piehole), Senator Byrd."

He carries around his copy of the Constitution so he can invoke the "arrest clause" and avoid traffic tickets. ;^)

Next time in either DC or his District, go to any address being made by Rep. Charles Taylor R, NC.

Along with the Constitution, he is also remarkably informed of the history of events which occurred in the House Buildings.

Since the Republican Revolution, such CongressPeople have become more common.

Newt Gingrich should come to anyones mind as another CongressCritter who was aware of, and acted in congruence with, the Constitution.

If your CongressCritter isn't what you want, tell him/her/it what you want. You are the boss, remember?

"The fact that he has more respect for the constitution than 99% of those on capitol hill is irrelevant."

If Byrd had any respect for the constitution, he would have voted to remove William Jefferson Clinton from office and would not now be a willing participant in this childish game of obstructing the Senate from voting on judges nominated by the President.

Not to mention the context in which he used what his staff would later call his "unfortunate choice of words," and what he was really trying to say when he chose them.

What he said was "I've known a lot of white niggers, if you want to use that word..." but he didn't finish. What he didn't say was "and they were every bit as bad as the black"

It was a blatantly racist remark coming from a lifetime of engrained, racist beliefs.

At least that's the way it sounded to me.

So, which one of your senators carries around a copy of the constitution?

Yes, but he has the "privilege from arrest" clause highlighted for the purpose of avoiding arrest or traffic tickets when he is pulled over for drunk driving. Other than that, he has no use for the constitution. He certainly isn't concerned with whether or not congress has any constitutional authority to spend federal tax dollars for his pork barrel projects in W.VA. He isn't too concerned with the imposition by his fellow dems of a de facto supermajority requirement for confirmation of executive branch appointees, abusing the separation of powers.
