Another Sign of the Times: Texas Newspaper Dumps Dishonest Dowd

Things just keep getting more and more embarrassing for the Old Gray Lady. "Maureen Dowd not wanted here," says a headline today in Texas' Lufkin Daily News.

"The New York Times' considerable credibility problem is now our problem, as well," says the article.

"But unlike the Times, which has been engaged in a torturous exercise of naval gazing and self-flagellation, with its accustomed arrogance, since it was revealed that one of its younger reporters had committed all sorts of journalistic sins, we are doing something about it, and fast.

"Until she explains to our satisfaction her own ethical transgression — an apparently deliberate distortion of a comment by President Bush — you will not find the work of Times columnist Maureen Dowd on this page."

For more about Dowd's distortion, check out this previous Inside Cover.

The Daily News' article notes: "Critics of the Times, who are everywhere, are watching with glee as Dowd, one of the more clever columnists around, tries to write herself out of this one. Here in Lufkin, at least one reader thinks she has dragged The Lufkin Daily News into the muck with her, noting that we frequently publish her work.

"'That does not say a whole lot for The Lufkin Daily News editorial page,'" one Sound Off caller said Thursday.

"Hopefully, our decision to suspend Dowd from these pages will help restore our credibility with the caller and other readers."

And then there's this final zinger: "we will always do our best to make this newspaper, your newspaper, a place where the likes of Jayson Blair, Rick Bragg and Maureen Dowd will never feel at home."

It's your move, Howell Raines. Suddenly the membership policies of a private Georgia golf club don't seem so all-important anymore, do they?

They lose Blair, Braggs, and Dowd. BBD on in rapid succession is not good for the listing Gray Lady at all.

..as Dowd, one of the more clever columnists around...

Well, I would say that I admired this newspapers stance. But that sentence tells me they are still idiots.

If someone documented all of the lies that Poison Ivy has put forth for the past 4 decades about Republicans and conservatives, forests would be wiped out to provide the paper.

Poison Ivy and her DC buddy, Helen Thomas have been lying about conservatives for at least 4 decades.

I think she is a creative and humorous writer with some good insights. Why are you afraid of different perspectives? Can you only listen to people who think and feel the same exact way as you do?

I think you need to get out more.

Why are you afraid of different perspectives?

Why have you taken it upon yourself to assume that about me?

More importantly, why are YOU afraid of the "different perspective" offered here by the readers and the editor of the Lufkin Daily News?

Can you only listen to people who think and feel the same exact way as you do?

Are you really asking me why I don't feel obliged to give a proven, unrepentant liar my attention, let alone my respect?

Are you THAT daft?

"I think she is a creative and humorous writer with some good insights. Why are you afraid of different perspectives?"

I enjoy creative and humorous writers with some good insights. Dave Barry for example. I enjoy writers with different perspectives. This includes unapologetic liberals such as Christopher Hitchins and Jeff Jarvis. I even enjoy a lot of Aaron McGruder's stuff, when he rises above his frequent cheap shots.

But Barry's stuff is not on the editorial page, Hitchins and Jarvis stick to facts in their editorials, and Boondocks is a cartoon. Ms. Dowd passes off cartoonish fiction as fact on the editorial page. That might impress you, but it does not impress me.
