In Calif. there is a law that considers the killing of a fetus, (other than an abortion)as a murder.
Therefore since Laci was killed and as a result the fetus was killed this was considered a double murder and If I recall the DA met with Laci's family and some other's before they decided to ask for the death penalty, which I think they said they have decided they would.
