Hollywood Legend Jane Russell Slams Abortion In Interview

LONDON, May 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK Life League, a British pro-life group has reported that Jane Russell, the 1940s and '50s Hollywood movie star and pin-up girl, now aged 82, gave an interview this week slamming abortion. "People should never, ever have an abortion. Don't talk to me about it being a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. The choice is between life and death," said Russell.

Describing her shock at finding herself pregnant at 18: "The only solution was to find a quack and get an abortion. I had a botched abortion and it was terrible. Afterwards my own doctor said: 'What butcher did this to you?' I had to be taken to hospital. I was so ill I nearly died. I've never known pain like it." Russell says that due to the abortion she was not able to have any other children.

Disagree. I worked in clinics too - the shame and guilt was unreal. I also have family members (two) who did this and have NEVER gotten over it.........

Re your# 151...25 years ago I had an abortion and I don't have any feeling of regret.

Well...yes...Some people are tough enough...self reliant enough....mentally insulated enough... to feel no sadness when children die....Those who do....Well they are simply weak and overly emotional.

I Agree.

This woman's got real courage for telling her own chilling abortion story, and she's right on target when she says, the choice is between life and death.
Jane Russell is more movie star than Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, and (laugh) Janeane Garofalo combined.

I can honestly say that only ONE woman I've spoken with who had an abortion was not remorseful later in life. Only ONE. I've known at least 15 women who had one.

Many of them remarked how back when they had abortions they weren't given the visuals of what a "baby" looked like at the time. Now that they KNOW.. they are deeply remorseful and know it was indeed an innocent child, a helpless child they killed.

I remind them that if they are sorry and ask for forgiveness they are forgiven, but that they should witness to every young woman they can.

The best thing that ever happened was the displays of the SIZE of babies in the womb at county fairs etc. When people are armed with knowledge..they normally make the right decisions.

You have to get into discussions with women to know if they are sorry they did it. Sometimes it takes the right kind of questions to get to the bottom of it all. Why? Because it is human nature to not want to live with guilt. So often times a woman might start off saying she did what she had to do at the time.. but if gently prodded, they will admit it was wrong and if they had known there was HELP out there, that they could have carried the child and given it up or had help raising it they would have kept the child. Not to mention the stigma of being a Mom out of wedlock. We should support courageous actions like carrying a child to term and giving it up for adoption if a person makes the decision to have sex then gets pregnant. It isn't the babies fault.

We need to remind young women today that there are alternatives. That killing an innocent helpless baby is NEVER the answer. That if they find themselves pregnant.. there are religious groups who will help them. That they should INCONVIENENCE themselves for 10 months and then give LIFE. Many times a family member would even be willing to adopt the child. But there are ALWAYS alternatives to killing a baby.. always.

I can assure you.. not only did I know the 15 personal friends,.. but having worked in maternity and ObGyn I saw the grief and guilt firsthand.

She MOURNS that child. It was almost 28 years ago, and even today she talks bitterly about being "fooled" about abortion and how she would feel. She expresses her grief at how old her child would be, what it would look like, everything. She has turned that into counseling others away from abortion and giving girls a place to live and help. But, as I said, she will "never" get over it as long as she lives.

Sorry she waited until age 82 to speak out!

Better late, than never, I would say....

Try Zell Miller for an honest Democrat.

Did you ever think that when you keep asking them the "right Kind of questions" they'll tell you anything to shut you up?

It is obvious this is very personal for you. But you are an adult.. and the ones who were killed were INNOCENT and HELPLESS.

Look I understand all the arguments and I actually believe that abortions should be VERY hard to get and I DEFINITELY believe in parental notification. My only reason for entering this debate was to tell all of you that if ALL women regretted their abortions, there would be no abortions anymore. If everyone who had abortions talked about it being the biggest mistake in their lives, there's be no abortions. But the truth is that there are just as many women who have no regret and I am one of them.

"I had only one point, and that point was that for every woman that cries about "regrets" there's another woman who doesn't."

The reports on this show it is only in the womans "youth" she does not exhibit regrets (during the decision making for the abortion). Sadly, your opinion stated above is not supported by statistics, as the majority of women report regrets and guilt later in life. It isn't an opinion that is "forced" out of them, but rather one they suffer from later in life and seek professional help for.

It doesn't help the women who had abortions get past this experience or the babies killed by abortion to deny it.

Lastly, let me say this.. women who in the past had abortions were misinformed and ill-advised. Rather than society helping them to take responsibility for having had sex.. we enabled them to commit horrendous crimes against humanity. Isn't it time we reversed that kind of thinking?

Women who had abortions can be the best advocates for NOT having one. Such as Ms. Russell.
