U.S. Mulled Series Of Sanctions Against Israel WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The Bush administration has prepared a list of sanctions against Israel should it refuse to comply with a plan for a Palestinian state by the end of the year.

U.S. government and congressional sources said the list was prepared by the State Department and relayed to the National Security Council in April amid the administration's effort to press Israel to agree to the so-called roadmap. The roadmap, drafted by Washington as well as the European Union, United Nations and Russia, calls for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian war and the establishment of an interim state in 2003.

The sources said the State Department's proposed list of sanctions included an examination of the use of U.S. weapons in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Israel has employed such platforms as the AH-64A Apache helicopter, the AH-1G Cobra helicopter and the F-16 fighter-jet in air attacks on Palestinian insurgents.

"It's hard to overestimate the anger within the administration toward Israel regarding the delays in the roadmap," a congressional source close to the administration said. "The White House doesn't regard the roadmap merely as foreign policy. It sees the roadmap as a major element toward the reelection of the president."

This story is completely unsourced. The President is heading into an election year. Condi Rice's NSC honcho for the ME is Elliot Abrams, a passionate advocate of Israeli security. Karl Rove is making huge progress in advancing the ball deep into Democrat territory among Jewish Americans.

And you're so quick to believe that we would put the throttle on Israel's throat? I'm not so quick to buy into that.

Yes, the Administration wants a Pallie State. Yes, they find the settlements to be a strategic block to that state. But for them to come down foursquare on the Arab side this early in the game would be foolish. The minute the Arabs got wind that the Jews were being abandoned, they would dig into their maximalist negotiating position and stay there.

The Administration knows this.

That's why this story is bullsh#t. Oh, btw, consider the source? Middle East Newsline? While it ain't exactly Robert the Fisk, it ain't exactly the soul of reliability, either.

This White House has made every effort not to go down the same Oslo byway as Clinton did. We've just fought a war that destroyed a major threat to Israel's national security. While we didn't go to war for Israel, the ancillary benefit for Israel does require them to be somewhat more flexible than they have been up to now.

Jew bashing was tried in the first Bush Administration. It didn't help the Old Man's cause. Doing the same wouldn't help Bush, and he knows it. So does Rove.

I very much doubt that this story is true, but of course Arafat is now in full hissy fit mode, doing what the Palestinians always do, geting in the way of any potential "peace" deal.

So Bush is finding out what Sharon knows, what Clinton learned...that the Palestinians have no intention whatsoever of making peace. This is just another round of Let's Not Make a Deal, hosted by the "we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity" Palestinians.
