Driver so drunk breathalyser crashes
A 44-year old Dutch motorist has stunned traffic police by drinking so much that their breathalyser crashed.
The man, from Krommenie, had so much alcohol in his breath that the machine in Wormerveer first refused to work and then showed out of range.
Some time later a police doctor gave the man, who has not been named, a blood test which showed the driver had seven times too much alcohol in his blood.
Police, who had flagged the motorist down for erratic driving, say he claimed to have only drunk "four beers".
A courts in Haarlem has since sentenced the man to a 15-month driving ban, a £600 fine and a two-week suspended jail sentence.

FYI, the BAC limit in the Netherlands is .05, bunch of pansies they are. It was only 35% alcohol in the blood. This guy doesn't compare to my neighbor in college, who obtained a police report from an incident where he had a .47 BAC. THe report was framed and hanging above his bar.

Might have been Samichlaus, an Austrian beer made by the Eggenberg brewery. It's close to 15% alcohol, more of a barley wine really.

Also, however many beers someone tells the cops they had, you can safely multiply that number by three or four to get a more accurate number.

One night I was reading pop smears in the lab and the night tech came up all breathless and said to me, Dr Ballo - LOOK AT THIS. It was a readout from a lab analyzer showing a blood alcohol of .502 gm/dl. Not really believing it I had her dilute the sample 1:1 and repeat the test and it came up ... ... .252. I went over to the ER and there he was, not dead and not even unconscious. We watched him as this BAC slowly declined. That is my personal maximum - the original 1 proof man.

The record in our county is .605. The guy was still ambulatory. One of my college classmates defended him the best he could at his DUI trial.

I wonder what the BAC is in one being treated for antifreeze? I give dogs ETOH until they are almost comatose and keep them that way for 48 hours. Is there a standard BAC for ethylene glycol toxicity?

A "Pop smear" is when one has been down on it. A "pap smear" is a sample of cells from the cervical region of a woman that is being examined for neoplastic or preneoplastic cellular characteristics. The "pop smear" can be done by any man wishing to satisfy the female. The "pap smear" is usually accomplished by a pathologist or cytologist.

FWIW, according to the web pages I've seen, the goal for ethylene glycol treatment in humans is to maintain EtOH at 100-150 mg/dL, which translates into a BAC of 0.1-0.15...

If this person is a diabetic this can happen. They breath out Ketones which in similar to alcohol and will send some analyzers off the scale.
