Barbra Streisand's Meltdown
The National Enquirer | June 3, 2003 (Current Issue) | Patricia Shipp, Patricia Towle, Alan Smith and Maggie Harbour

Posted on 05/26/2003 1:46:50 PM PDT by 7 x 77

A hearbroken Barbra Streisand has suffered a shocking breakdown -- triggered by an overwhelming concern for her only child, who's stricken with the deadly AIDS virus.

The superstar's fiercely independent son Jason Gould, 36, is resisting his mother's efforts to take control of his treatment and get him to move from New York to her side in Los Angeles.

Although devoted Barbra is acting out of love, the family drama has left the Hollywood legend heartsick, emotionally drained, and unable to sleep, say sources.

On top of that, the singer is terrified that Jason will develop full-blown AIDS, and she's butting heads with him over his desire to speak out publicly about his illness.

When his press-shy mother instructed him not to grant interviews, Jason lashed out -- telling her there was no way he'd knuckle under and return to L.A. And he failed to show up at her recent 61st birthday party.

Now friends fear the mother-son tension is destroying Barbara -- and the strain is sadly evident in her tired appeaance.

"Barbara's been a wreck," declared a pal.

"Not only is she heartsick over Jasson's medical condition, she's also devastated he won't allow her to help take care of him."

Added a family friend:

"Barbra's not sleeping at night. She's worried sick about Jason. She launched an all-out campaign to get Jason to leave New York and come home to L.A. -- but he's as headstrong as Barbra."

Jason insists on facing what's in store for him on his own -- and the stress is wrecking Barbra's life.

As the Enquirer reported exclsively in February, Barbra's only child, who tested positive for the AIDS virus three years ago, was hospitalized at he New York Weill Cornell Medical Center with a case of chicken pox -- which can be life-threatening in patients with compromised immune systems.

"Thge moment Jason was released from the hospital, Barbra once again began pleading with her son to leave his home in New York and move back to Los Angeles so she could watch over him," revealed the family friend.

The devoted mom even offered to supply Jason, her son by actor Elliott Gould, with a home near hers.

"She was desperate to make sure Jason was getting the best medical care possible. And because of all the work her Streisand Foundation is doing with AIDS research in Los Angeles, she felt Jason would get the best care possible there," explained the family friend.

But Jason is flatly refusing his mother's helping hand -- and that decision has taken a terrible toll on the Academy Award winner, disclosed an insider.

"Often times, expecially after a phone conversation with Jason, she will break down and cry to her husband (Jim Brolin).

"Jim tries his best to console her, but what can he say when there is notheing he can do?

"Although Barbra was never a social butterfly, she liked having friends come to her Malibu house. Now it seems as though all she wants is too be alone.

"And while her agents would love to see her take on another film project, she is hardly ever willing to pick up a script and read it. She spends a lot of time on the Internet and on the phone to her foundation, asking about the most recent medications to treat AIDS.

"She is constantly on the lookout for something new that can help Jason."

In Hollywood, Barbra is a major power broker, but with her own son she must keep hands off, and the dilemma is "tearing her apart," says her pal.

"Sometimes Barbra tears up at the mention of Jason or if she hears anything aoubt AIDS."

Jason realizes that Barbra's actions stem from the deep love she has for him, but he's determined to live his own life, added her pal.

"And on the other die, Barbra understands Jason's way of thinking, but she just wants to put him in a protective bubble so no one can hurt him.

"If they didn't love each other so much it wouldn't be so painful."

Barbra is also very concerned about the public's perception of her son's ordeal and believes it's best for him to shun publicity, but Jason has courageously spoken out about his HIV status.

In fact, a source says the mother-son rift has its roots in early 2001 when Jason, a talented actor in his own, right, decided to come out as a gay man in the Jan. 16, 2001, Advocate magazine.

The strain between the two was never more apparent than when Jason stayed away from his mother's 61st birthday celebration.

"Everybody else in the family was there," disclosed a close source.

And the insider added, "It was really sad on Barbra's 61st birthday -- April 24 -- that James and his children were with her but Jason did not come in from New York. She wanted so much to have him with her on her special day, but Jason told her he would not be making the trip."

Ironically, Barbra is duplicating her own family patterns, said the source.

"Barbra and Jason have the same love/hate relationship Barbra had with her own mother." The singer's mother, Diana Kind, died a year ago from complications from a fall.

"Jason moved to New York becuse he finds it difficult living in his mother's shadow in L.A.," added the source.

"He told a friend, 'Her biggest regret is that she doesn't have grandkids -- but we don't talk about that a lot.'"

Before Jason was struck by chicken pox, Barbra had begun relaxing her controlling ways and the tension eased. Jason repsonded by visiting and calling regularly. But his recent medical crisis fired up Barbra's mothering instincts, say sources.

Concluded the insider: "Barbra fears the worst for Jason and wants so much for him to let his mother protect him. But there's nothin she can do but stand by and watch him handle his illness on his own.

"I hope there is a way for Barbra to come to peace with all his becuase she is doing Jason abslutely no good by running herself into the ground."

No need to apologize. I will add them to a prayer list.

The big distinction between ~us~ and ~them~ is charity.

You need no forgiveness for feeling sorry for them....you would be a monster if you didn't. Pray Barbra...pray Jason.

Putting Jason in the ground just yet may be a tad premature. Many people are living 15-20 years after their diagnosis of having the bug.
Most deaths are ugly deaths. Dying of AIDS is worse in what way? Even the mythic "died in his sleep" just means that someone died overnight at home. Absent witnesses or videotape, who knows how painful these lucky deaths are?
"Now friends fear the mother-son tension is destroying Barbara -- and the strain is sadly evident in her tired appeaance."
My gawd!, she must look like Yoda now!

No need to ask forgiveness. No need at all.

A child is your child no matter what his/her age or the age of the parent. I despise Ms. Streisand. However,I will pray for her and her son that they get through this ordeal and that they both find the peace they should have through their mother/son relationship. All the money in the world can't fix this problem...not all the money in the world. Very sad situation. Very sad!

I feel as sorry for Babs and her gay son as Babs feels for Charlton Heston and President Reagan.

Like you stated, "what goes around comes around" and sometimes it happens while we're alive to enjoy it.

It is a human tragedy. Headstrong people often make their own problems in families, even though at root their love is unquestionable. No matter what side of the political divide we are on, we all are subject to pain in our families. This is a matter for prayer.

It definitely doesn't help that George W. is in the White House, either.

Not even those who get it from blood transfusions? How about those born with it? How about those how have gotten AIDS from transplants -- cornea transplants, for instance?

I suppose we will now have BS before Congress blaming the Administration for not stopping her son's destructive life style and risky behavior before it stopped him.

I'm very sorry for anyone going through a medical crisis, however at some point both this mother BS and her adult son had to make choices and live with the consequences.

It is ironic that Elizabeth Taylor, BS, and Cher all have children who are homosexual and have problems accepting them as such, though they expect the rest of America to do so. (Reports are that ET, this one about BS and Cher all want to issue some sort of gag order to their kids not to speak to the press) These are also the people who want the middle class taxpaying public to fund research and development into finding AIDS/or particular illness cures, however they do not donate the royalties from their vast contracts to fighting such devastating diseases.

I wonder, as a political aside, if she ever penned a note thanking GWB for his recent AIDS funding in Africa? Inquiring minds....

I clicked into this thread with all kinds of nasty thoughts to write. Then I started reading some others'. I will pray for her and her son that they can one day reconcile their differences and make up before one of them dies. I will still despise her political views but she is a human being with feeling just like me.

Barbra Streisand's Letter to Democrats

Monday, April 2, 2001

Nice Guys Finish Last or Where Do We Go From Here: A Case for the Democrats

What has happened to the Democrats since the November election? Some of you seem paralyzed, demoralized and depressed. I hope you're through arguing among yourselves and distancing yourselves from President Clinton. Let's not let them divert attention from the success of his administration over the past eight years. Let's not allow the Republicans to take away the gains we've made. The Republicans understand the power of unity.

We should have one goal, and that's to win back the House, Senate and Presidency. Unless we win, we'll be consistently on the defensive with our fingers holding the dyke [sic] against the Republican revolution. We should draw attention to the differences in our parties, hold accountable those currently in power and make them pay for their actions on Election Day. This is not a time to be weak.

The public responds to strength. You don't have to be ruthless like the Republicans, just be strong. Remember the example set by Reagan, with whom the public consistently disagreed on policy issues while they strongly approved of him. People approved of him because they respected his strength. They respected the fact that he held strong beliefs, even if they disagreed with the beliefs themselves. I think they feel the same way about George W. Bush. Look at his ratings - how could such a destructive man be so popular with the American people? George W. Bush has turned out to be exactly the man we knew he was - someone who goes back on his word. Not only is he poisoning our air and water by withdrawing his promise to enforce emissions standards and arsenic regulations, he's poisoning our political system as well. Bipartisanship only works if you can trust the other side. As we have learned in the past weeks, we cannot trust George W. Bush.

This is key moment in our history. We cannot let the right wing roll back more than thirty years of social progress. We must mount a strong, strategic and targeted offense against the Republican revolution that is now sweeping all branches of government.

We have a president who stole the presidency through family ties, arrogance and intimidation, employing Republican operatives to exercise the tactics of voter fraud by disenfranchising thousands of blacks, elderly Jews and other minorities. We have a Congress passing laws that benefit corporations and the privileged few at the expense of the working men and women of this country. We have a Supreme Court that is seeking to overturn everything we struggled for over the last 30 years. And they're just getting started.

In the past five years, there have been 26 Supreme Court decisions invalidating Congress' power to make use of the commerce and equal protection clauses of the Constitution. By usurping Congress' power to make laws, the right wing of the Supreme Court is substituting its judgment for the will of the people. These five justices are favoring the rights of multinational corporations over most Americans. We must speak out against this injustice and defeat this interference.

Who benefits from this Republican strategy? Those who bought and paid for the election of George W. Bush - corporate America, that's who:

Banking and financial corporations like MBNA contributed $1.3 million to Bush's campaign. They already got something for their money. As you well know, Republicans recently tightened bankruptcy laws that will create billions of dollars in additional revenue for banks and their corporate partners by weakening protections for working people who fall prey to credit card companies' dirty tactics.

Manufacturing interests like Samuel Heyman of the GAF Corporation, a former manufacturer of asbestos-laden building products. Heyman donated $250,000 to the GOP last July. Three days later, Republicans delivered a bill to the House floor - which luckily did not pass, thanks to Democrats - that would have protected asbestos companies against claims from thousands of asbestos victims and would have cost taxpayers more than $150 million a year in benefits to the industry.

Construction industry companies and their executives gave all but 4 percent of their $2 million in political contributions to Republicans. They have already received payback. Bush's executive order to eliminate preference to firms that hire union workers in assigning government contracts means they can hire workers who are not covered by union protections. Industry leaders will greatly benefit from Bush's decision to overturn workplace standards that protect employees from repetitive stress injuries.

The Oil Industry supported the Bush/Cheney campaign by more than 4-to-1 in its campaign contributions. Bush has said he will deregulate the energy market and drill in protected wildlife areas, both of which greatly please executives like Kenneth Lay, who gave more than $362,000 in personal contributions, and his Enron energy company, which has played a central role in the Western States energy crisis. In addition, according to Mother Jones magazine, corporate pollsters like David Koch (who gave more than $484,000 in personal contributions) and his Koch Industries will benefit by Bush's loosening of the environmental standards put into place by President Clinton.

And speaking of Clinton, how long will we continue to let the Republicans use the pardon issue as a tool of distraction? Why focus such attention on contributions to a Presidential Library Foundation? Talk about Republican pardons. George Bush protected himself by pardoning those linked to him in the Iran-Contra scandal. He pardoned a heroin drug trafficker and a terrorist who was responsible for 73 deaths. Clinton's pardons have no impact on the health and welfare of the American people. What the Republicans are doing to our country does! As Rose Kennedy said about John Kennedy: "Great men have great flaws." But they still can achieve great things.

George W. Bush's first months in office have been filled with shameless quid pro quos and paybacks. There are some quid pro quos that don't hurt anyone. Others, that put private interests over the needs of the American people, are quite destructive. More than $3 billion was spent on federal campaigns last election cycle. Even if we can't directly link this money to votes taken in Congress, it is obvious that money buys influence and access under the current system. This problem is almost as prevalent among Democrats as it is with Republicans. This is why I have always supported public financing of elections.

Don't forget that the "wise men and women" of the Supreme Court installed the President they wanted in the White House, ignoring the will of the people. In my view, that was a "Supreme Coup".

Why be afraid to speak out and remind the public of what happened last November? Maybe it's because some of you are up for reelection and, therefore, might be afraid to rock the boat. Well, I disagree. Rocking the boat is what wins elections!

You need to speak on TV, on radio and in the newspapers about the election and keep hammering home about the legislative favors Bush is granting his corporate supporters in exchange for their campaign contributions. (I think the media is finally catching on.) You need to organize, to motivate, to inspire the disillusioned citizens and the disenfranchised voters of this country who think their votes don't matter. Reach out to voters against gun violence, to voters who want to protect choice, to voters dedicated to saving the environment. Show them you care and we can win.

Unfortunately, the public is being fooled by Bush. They are not sufficiently informed to protect their own self-interests. They like him personally. Despite the problems we face, Democrats are the party of, by and for the people while Republicans are the party of, by and for the corporation. Keep reminding people of that! Our leaders and policymakers have to fight for the concepts and ideals that have shaped the Democratic Party for generations. Our country cannot afford to wait. Just being nice doesn't work. Let's act now and fight before it's too late! I know you can do it.

- Barbra

Streisand would dance with joy if President Bush or any other Republican had a fatal disease. She has tried her best to spread hatred for him. I don't feel sorry for her.

Please forgive me, but I feel sorry for them.
