WEST MILFORD -- In retrospect, Robert Skrypek said Sunday, jumping on the back of a black bear that was fighting with his golden retriever might not have been the best thing to do. But at the time, there was no other good option.

We're here; the bears need to be relocated or their numbers reduced.

On some days you get the bear, on other days ...

I dont think it would be that difficult to keep a 44 mag Super Redhawk or 44 S&W Mountain gun handy in a place toddlers couldnt reach..
Its obvious our femanized society would rather protect two and four legged predators than its honest citizenry
But jumping on a 350 lb black bears ...the ole west aint got nothing on this guy...
There is riding bare back and then there is riding bear back....hi ho Yogi...is a big booboo imo

Never bring a human to a bear fight.
To: Pharmboy
Robert, whoever told you that was a golden retriever actually sold you a yellow lab. Sheesh.

Bradley Campbell that suggested that Skrypek somehow provoked the attack or that the family's storage of its garbage lured the bear into the yard. femanzized response of a pogue bureaucrat...blame the victim...protect the predator...

My daughter and son-in-law take great pains to avoid "surprising" the bears that have invaded their NJ property : double checking before walking outside, using an airhorn to announce their presence, and keeping their dog on leash. They still worry - with good cause.

Not the best response, not the
only response...but big points for not standing there like a weenie boy waiting for someone else to do something.
This guy can watch my back anytime.

Yep...doesn't sound like this guy backed down from too many fights in his life. We'll have to add his name to the list of other Americans who fought predators without guns (at least in legend): Davy Crockett (bear) and Gen. Israel Putnam (wolf).

My neighbors would love me using an airhorn when I let my big yella dog out at 5:30 AM.

As an avid hunter, he said, he has never shot anything that he did not intend to eat. I think it would be morally permissible to shoot something that was trying to east you.
That said, the bear was only defending herself and her cub, and ran off at the firt opportunity. Similarly the dog was only defending his territory and more importantly his people.
If you live in bear country, you'd best keep a 12 gauge loaded with slugs handy. Oh, but this is New Jersey, I'm not sure if those are allowed there.
The only way to keep the bear numbers down is to remove their habitat, probably not good idea. Relocation is probably futile it the bears are already up against residentual neighborhoods. The other choice is to learn to live with the bears, only using that 12 ga in extreme situation such as this none. That probably means stuff like not leaving the garbage out overnight, checking your yard before letting the dog out and so forth.

...or a 12-gauge with a rifled slug. Much better, the .44 Mag will likely only make the bear that much madder, unless the shot placement is extremely fortunate. Any misses will not endear you to your neighbors either.

'big points' indeed!
He's probably overestimating the size of the bear a little - they're hairy buggers. ;^)
What was he thinking?!? A bear his own weight could have killed him easily.
He's definitely a candidate for ballsy guy of the year. ;^)

12 gauge loaded with slugs handy. Oh, but this is New Jersey, I'm not sure if those are allowed there. Checked the NRA/ILA NJ law summary and they are, excepting certain "assualt shotguns", including "any semiautomatic shotgun with either a magazine capacity exceeding six rounds, a conspicuous pistol grip, or a folding stock". That is unless you have been convicted of a crime, if you are under 18, or if you're under a domestic restraining. If so, I guess you're bear chow as far as the State is concerned.

Oops, big "gotcha". New Jersey has a "lock up your safety law. "It is unlawful to leave a loaded firearm within reach or easy access of a person under 16. This provision does not apply to a firearm stored in a securely locked box or container; or in a location which a reasonable person would believe to be secure; or securely locked with a trigger lock; or under circumstances where a minor obtained a firearm as a result of an unlawful entry by person.".
I guess you're all bear chow as far as the State of New Jersey is concerned, including "the children" this provision is allegedly designed to protect.
