very strange, in any case, the captain of this ship will not have his post much longer.

The Navy has little tolerance for "freak accidents" occuring two times now within days. That's just the way it is, or at least used to be years ago. Let's see what comes of this, but I would not be surprised to see that captain quietly changing assignments.

The first sailor fell overboard while attempting to catch a football.
This second sailor is simply missing. He could still be on the ship. They're still searching.

The Fox reporter on board the Nassau noted that the sailor that's currently missing had wanted to see a chaplain in the past few days.

This is very very weird.
Most sailors lost are blown off the deck of a carrier.
Either they let discipline and ordinary caution go to hell so close to home or they have a psycho on board getting even with people.

He probably just fell asleep on the crapper. Don't laugh it happened on my ship and we were looking for the guy for over 2 hours.

My little brother worked on avionics on F-14's on the Nimitz. One of the crew wasn't paying attention to the fact the jet was still being unhooked from the cables, and had the pilot gun the engine. If my brother hadn't been holding on to one of those heavy electronics cables he would have been toast.

Nothing like that was mentioned, one way or the other.

I think during the impromtu press briefing, the captain said that the sailor had been missing since 6:30am, at least.

Dear John letter? Probable. After being gone for 9 months things can change back at home with wifes and girlfriends. I'm not saying that this guy comitted suicide but it happens. I've seen it myself after spending 20 years in the Navy.

We had on go over from the hanger deck on the way home from Desert Storm, but that was intentional. Two in a couple of days is not good!

I was on the America CVA66 In 1968. We had a compartment cleaner jump overboard after cutting loose a raft which didn't open. Flight ops were stopped for a day to search for him. And we found him, seems he found a flourescent tube in the water and it kept him afloat. It glowed when radar swept past. Anyway he thought he was going to make to Hong Kong on the raft somehow. I expect he's still doing time in the federal pen.

Could the death of one sailor and the resulting media attention have pushed a suicidal sailor over the edge? After a famous person commits suicide, there is usually a rash of copycat suicides. Maybe this had a similar trigger effect. Of course, this is just speculation.

After being gone for 9 months things can change back at home with wifes and girlfriends You may have to add "boyfriends" to your list. I think a homo relationship was rumored to be a possible cause of the Iowa gun turret explosion. Who knows, maybe the first guy was the lover.
