NEW HAVEN, Conn.  — An explosion was reported in a mail room at the Yale University (search) law school, a city spokesman said.

James Foye, a spokesman for Mayor John DeStefano, said he had no immediate information about any injuries.

The FBI (search) in New Haven said members of the agency's terrorism task force were sent to the scene.

Smoke could be seen rising from downtown.

The incident came as the nation was on elevated alert for possible terrorist attacks and several hours after President Bush — a Yale alumnus — visited the state to speak at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduation ceremony in New London.

I agree with what you're saying on one level-- but on the other hand, Al Qaeda did strike the World Trade Center and the Pentagon for a reason: they're high profile symbols of America and Americans.

Do you really think a classroom in Yale is in the same category? (I don't)

If the bomb did come from a terrorist bomber, the bomber is likely to be a student or ex-student--and perhaps the specific target was more a matter of "convenience" to the bomber.

If terrorists were hell-bent on destroying America and the American way of life, then one would think they would consider Yale Law School to be a force for good.

Al Qaeda doesn't differentiate in its hate for Americans. Conservative Americans are bad, in their eyes, because they are mostly Christian, love America, and do what is necessary to defend it. Leftist Americans are bad, in their eyes, because they are mostly Jewish or atheist, believe in moral relativism, and are secularists.

At any rate, we can all see the symbolic value of Yale Law as a powerful American institution (powerful for better or for worse).
