ITHACA -- Ithaca College's 108th Commencement Exercise saw degrees conferred on 1,350 graduates. One of the commencement speakers, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream co-founder Ben Cohen, was cheered and also booed when he criticized national spending priorities and the war in Iraq during his address to the graduates.

I feel the need to chime in here as an Ithaca student that attended graduation.... The picture painted by the Ithaca Journal is just plain incorrect. The notion that all the graduates stood in applause except for the two that walked out is false. The music school, along with humanitites and sciences (politics, sociology, etc...) was quite supportive. Reaction was mixed elsewhere, especially in the business school where the speech was almost entirely condemned. The more interesting story was in the stands where many family members walked out. The students see this garbage everyday, but this was new to parents. The administration was visibly unhappy during the speech. The President pulled references to the Ice Cream duo in her speech, after Ben's tirade. The Senior Class President (a republican), began her speech by stating, "Now it's time for a real speech, on what this ceremony is supposed to be about." Though Ben's words were disgraceful, it only assisted the backlash that is started to from.

Cohen was booed by some members of the audience when he criticized the recent war in Iraq, and chastised the U.S. government for spending billions more on nuclear weapons and defense than feeding and housing the nation's poorest people. He got booed for that in Ithaca? I think this is a sign of the Apocalypse, or something.

Lucas Shapiro, an Ithaca resident who graduated from Ithaca's Alternative Community School, said he's lucky. He has a job lined up in New York City as the national youth organizer for the Democratic Socialists of America.Smart lad.
He's brushing up his resume for a top slot at the DNC.

No, this is not one of the six daughters of the late Dr. Betty Shabazz (wife of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz aka Malcolm X).

Hy manic, must be a relief to finally have that question answered after SIXTEEN MONTHS, eh?
Bet it really weighed on your mind.
To: NativeNewYorker
This reply is meant only to address a portion of the comment made, "her family name screams hypersensitivity". Use of the name Shabazz is a way to take back the history and pride that was taken by slaveholders. Pride in who you are and where you came from is a quality that should be respected.

Holy crap, I had to turn on the "Wayback" machine to even figure out what y'all were talking about! LOL
