Mexico is committed to reducing migrant deaths and improving security on the border, but the flow of illegal immigrants will continue so long as there is no organized and legal way to seek temporary work in the United States, Mexico's deputy foreign minister said Saturday.
Geronimo Gutierrez toured the border Friday and Saturday on behalf of Mexico's President Vicente Fox.
"Having mechanisms for migration that are legal, secure and orderly creates the security that is so much a concern to the United States," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez also issued a warning to "coyotes," people smugglers, who, he said, bear the greatest blame for the border's annual harvest of death.
"It is high priority of President Fox to put an end to these bands of people traffickers who lie to the migrants, lead them into the desert, then abandon them," he said. "They will be pursued; they will be prosecuted."
Gutierrez spoke at a press conference here after a two-day tour of the Arizona-Sonora border. He said border consulates will redouble their campaign to warn migrants of the dangers they face.
But he repeated his government's position that it can do nothing to stop its citizens from traveling freely.
About 350 Mexican immigrants die every year trying to cross the border.
According to the U.S. Border Patrol, at least 145 people died trying to enter the United States through Arizona last year, although an Arizona Daily Star analysis of law enforcement, medical examiner, and Mexican Consulate records found more than 160 deaths.

and here I was under the impression that we had some kind of work visa program all along...

We tried a temporary worker program with Mexico once before - it took Operation Wetback to repatriate them.

There exists an H1B visa program that has already devastated the incomes of engineers and IT people but they want it all.

Access to U.S. jobs a must, Mexico says This shows how far we have fallen as a country. When a Two-Bit Banana Republic like Mexico can DEMAND that OUR Government continue to let Mexico replace American Workers with their Illegal Aliens you know ALL Respect for America IS GONE. Our self-respect as a Sovereign Country is Gone too...and they know it. Its all too clear that Our Government No Longer Represents American Citizens. Thanks Jorge.

Mexico's true problem is Mexico. The corruption is too rampant and high up, it is entrenched, and only a complete and total overhaul from the president down, can cure it. Of course, the police, sheriffs, justice system, lawyers, judges, civil workers.
Never mind, Mexico is a lost cause. As, my mom why she left, and why my grandfather encouraged her to leave. No opportunities outside the elite few.

Let's see how much Fox REALLY cares about his illegals by mentioning again we'd like to tie a deal with oil rights in exchange for illegals. We take Mexican oil, we take Mexicans. Otherwise no deal ---we need to have a way to defray some of the costs to the US taxpayers.

but the flow of illegal immigrants will continue so long as there is no organized and legal way to seek temporary work in the United States, Mexico's deputy foreign minister said Saturday. You know...since we as a nation are so fond of China...I'd bet that for the right price they'd show us how to seal the border so tight that not even a flea could get across. And considering the massive costs that illegal immigration represents in terms of health care, crime, and education, we could hire lots of US citizens for $40,000 a year and put them to work guarding the border - and still come ahead on overall costs.
Ahh, well. All a fantasy, I fear.

right. that was a shot at sarcasm. we have all kinds of visas that folks can apply for in order to ome here legally. the mexicans (and others) just don't bother with such formalities.
To: dennisw
We already gave them millions of jobs with NAFTA ----why isn't that helping in the least? Something about the greedy rich Mexicans taking all the profit in all that slave labor. The people are left being worse off than slaves.

Of course, the police, sheriffs, justice system, lawyers, judges, civil workers. Mexico has ALWAYS been a corrupt sewer of a nation--nothing new here. Funny, for more than 200 years, we never had a serious problem with Illegal Immigration up until the 1970s. That's because America back then NEVER would have tolerated Mexico dumping its masses over here in numbers and, most importantly, Mexico Feared the United States.
The difference between then and now is that in today's Dumbed Down, Politically Correct, Multicultural America we have become so weak and divided that we can no longer protect our sovereignty as a nation. We could do it before. Now merely protecting our borders from this invasion is considered Racist!

and here I was under the impression that we had some kind of work visa program all along... We do --and for Mexicans too ---many have been let in legally ---and the majority of our legal immigrants already come from Mexico --- with unemployment numbers up so high, there's no reason for anyone to think we need guest workers or more immigrants now. Mexicans need to stay in Mexico and work those NAFTA plants.

Actually, I think it's for the benefit of Mexican socialist corruption.
Technically (according to its Constitution), Mexico is a Socialist state. Since, as we all know, Socialism really means that the workers get lots of rhetoric and the party bosses get lots of money, I guess this means that Mexico is really and truly a Socialist state. Because that's what's happening there.
Maybe if Mexico became a real capitalist democracy, there'd be changes down there. I think Fox tried, but he's weak, and I think he tried for about two weeks after his election and gave up immediately thereafter.

It really all goes back to fact that in many ways we are not much more than livestock on a ranch called America operated for the benefit of business. Excellent Analogy! American Citizenship is a Meaningless Concept today...other than you are the FOOL that has to defray the welfare costs and perhaps give up your job for the benefit of any of the millions of immigrant squatters in this land...er Ranch.

Fitz,
You, of all people, know better than to expect Mexico to make a deal about oil. Do you actually trust them to keep their end of the deal while at least 1000 illegals/day are slipping in the US?
Texas farmers make deals every six months for water that according to the 1944 treaty they owe us. They quit paying the year NAFTA went into effect forcing our farmers and economy to lose Billions since 1992. If they force the Texas farmers out of business, then Mexico will have almost all control of produce in the US.

Whatever will resonate with our hollow men liberals. That's the propaganda game the Mexis play along with the Islamics and all multi-cultis.

You, of all people, know better than to expect Mexico to make a deal about oil. Of course I know ---which is why I thought it was hilarious when our Congress brought up the idea of privitizing Pemex as part of an immigration deal and the Mexicans began foaming at the mouth. Likely whoever in Congress that proposed that knows full well the Mexican elites intend to keep all that oil money to themselves ---which is why they'd never want it privitized and being state-owned isn't doing the average Mexican the least bit of good. All that oil money goes to a very few people and that's they way they intend to keep it.
So every time they make a demand, we should say "OIL" and they'll go into their Mexican hatdances ---at least it's amusing.
