"Texas House Dems--Bad Sports and Poor Role Models"

Posted by Doc Farmer Friday, May 16, 2003

I've never been much of a sports person. I didn't run, I didn't swing the bat, I didn't punt, pass and kick. I can't skate well (roller or ice), my jump shot doesn't work because it involves the word ''jump,'' and skiing to me is just a fancy term for strapping a couple of two-by-fours to your feet and falling off a cliff in cold weather. And I've only been golfing once in my life. I shot an 89. Luckily for everybody else in the group, we were only playing 9 holes. When people ask my what my handicap is, I proudly reply, ''no athletic ability whatsoever!''

But even with that, Dad still taught me good sportsmanship. He said it was an analogy for life. If you make a foul, you raise your hand. You play fair. You play by the rules, and you don't change them in the middle of the game. You play to win, but you don't get into a major snit if you lose. You accept it and look toward the next game. You don't go home crying to Mommy if things don't go your way (mostly because Mom taught me the same rules as Dad did, so no sympathy there). You don't take your ball and end the game because you're mad.

Pity, then, that around 50 members of the Texas legislature--the lib/dem/soc/commie side of the aisle, of course--have decided to break the law they're sworn to uphold because they're at risk of losing some congressional seats in a redistricting.

Too bad. So sad. Tough chads.

They've been ''hiding'' in a Holiday Inn just across the Texas border in Oklahoma. Considering their love of illegal aliens, I'm surprised they went North instead of South. Actually, I'm reliably informed that they really wanted to go to Disney World in Florida, but it brought up some bad election memories for them. Plus, they heard that Michael Moore had devastated the all-you-can-eat buffet, while working on a new documentary proving that Mickey and Minnie are, in fact, Saddam and Osama in disguise.

But I digress.

These legislators (I want to call them something else, but my editor told me this is a family column--think of another word for donkeys, and you'll have the general idea) have been in overall control of the Texas House for decades. They've been running the show, calling the shots, and generally riding roughshod over their rep/con opponents on the other side of the aisle. Well, that's how the game is played. And it is a game to them, by the way (BOTH sides, that is). The fact that their ''game'' has an impact on folks lives seems to be only a secondary concern to them. Unless there's a camera nearby, and then they're foursquare for/against whatever is oppressing/liberating the folks they are so concerned about representing/screwing.

Well, now the ball's in the other court. Power play, suicide squeeze, full court press, whatever sports analogy you want to invoke. The lib/dem/soc/commies were voted out of power. The rep/cons are now in charge.

So what do the minority members of the Texas House do?

They take their ball, and then run AWAY from home.

They ''hide'' in a hotel (and I wonder who's paying the bill THERE, folks!), and protest the unfair treatment they've received at the hands of those in power. They complain that they're going to lose more power because of the redistricting that is going on. Redistricting that, if I'm not mistaken, is about two years overdue because the lib/dem/soc/commies were too busy mucking around with their power plays and their games to actually get some REAL work done. Also, it may be that since they'd lost the White House in 2000, they were hoping for a mid-term boost in the off-year elections.

Oops!

Well, you play the game, you take the risk. Or, at least, you're supposed to take the risk. For some Texas legislative cowards, you just run away and hide. And raid the mini-bar and charge the dirty movies to your office credit card...

(Note to: General Manager at the Holiday Inn, Ardmore Okla.--''Don't take any chances. When those legislators leave, count the silver, check their luggage, and do a strip-and-cavity search of these bozos. Don't believe me? Ask some of the crew of the Aircraft Carrier USS George Washington what happened to all those towels, bathrobes, and ashtrays after Clinton and his entourage left.'' )

The point here is that the lib/dem/soc/commie Texan legislators should be playing by the rules. But they are not.

And what happens, in sports, when you break the rules?

Texas law states that: Two-thirds of each House shall constitute a quorum to do business, but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner and under such penalties as each House may provide. (Texas Constitution, Article 3, Section 10)

I hope those Texans reading this won't mind, but I'd like to provide you with some suggestions on exactly what should be done to those lib/dem/soc/commie miscreants from the Lone Star State.

* Immediate forced resignation of all '''escapees,'' and a special election to choose their replacement (not a mere selection of a new lib/dem/soc/commie by their political party) * Jail - 5 years hard labor, or however long it takes them to pay off their hotel AND bar bill at 50 cents a day * Ban them from holding any political office in the future * Force them to watch a Paulie Shore Movie Marathon--for ONE MONTH!

Yes, I realize that last one comes under the heading of ''cruel and unusual punishment.'' You say that, as if it were a BAD thing.

Of course, most of my friends say that the Texas rep/cons will wuss out on any punishment of their lib/dem/soc/commie colleagues. After all, look at all the stuff those folks in Washington do, and say, with nary a peep of censure from the media or the Republicans.

To which my reply is quite simple.

There's a WORLD of difference between D.C. and Texas! In Texas, most folks there trade under a common currency. It's called courage. Something you'll find in severe shortage in the Nation's Capitol. With the notable exception of the Oval Office, that is...

I hear tell that the Texas House has caved. So much for Texas "courage", at least as it relates to their elected officials...

Just to let you know, I am proud of our President from Texas.

I am ashamed that the Chicken D's are from Texas.

That's too bad. Living on the left side of Oregon, I at least held out some hope that my home state was the last bastion of political integrity. When the Republic (of Texas) falters, what's left?

I need to say that I am shocked, SHOCKED(!), and saddened by the behavior of the democraps in the Texas House and the apparent inability of the Republicans to do anything about it. Clearly, they will repeat this maneuver with any and every bill that they don't like that they can't stop by normal parliamentary dirty tricks.

I hadn't realized until this morning that the bill was to expire last night. Can the bill be reintroduced and the doors to the chambers be chained until it is voted on?

Is there a pattern here? The Senate Dem's in Washington filibuster Bush's judge nominees. Seems like tyranny of the minority. The liberals will stop at nothing to exercise every measure of power they can find. Does that willpower exist in the Republicans?

Of course, policitcal power is an end in itself for liberals. For conservative's it's a means to an end.

A special session can be called, but they can fly from that also! Our only solution is to oust them at election time it seems.

Once they have a quorum, it's "Katy, bar the door!"

Sadly, it seems as if they are as testicularly deficient as those in both houses of Congress in downtown DC...

Sad day for the Repubs to let the RATS get away with this cowardly and childish behavior. Sounds like the Texas State Repubs and RATS modeled themselves after the U.S. Congress Repubs and RATS.

Hello, I was in Armore protesting for the past few days. Do ya'll mind of I share a couple of photos? Hope not. Better give feedback quick if you don't want them after the first one comes up.

Wednesday there were from one (me) to 15 protesters against the DIMocRATS there all day. Thursday there was a much better showing. I was dissappointed in us... but, then most of US do work. However, they only had 2 supporters there for a bit on Wednesday and 5 yesterday (Thursday) for only about 10 minutes. The first photo I want to show you is of their supporting ringleader leaving yesterday after their 10 minutes of spouting. Warning: this may be offensive to real men. Their ringleading supporter is the guy in the dress.

I promise, I am not pulling anybody's leg with this. Freeper RoseD was there and saw this as well as my daughter and many other protesters.

Well, nobody posted an objection to me posting photos from Ardmore so I'll put up another one.

Late yesterday afternoon the Dims decided this was a historical moment and they wanted a photo of the group in front of the Holiday Inn (can you say PR stunt?) So, here they come walking out the side door by the Denny's and yet, notice that all the TV cameras are focused on US - the ones protesting them - instead!!! (let 'em stick that in their pipes and smoke it - but not inhale)

These Dems act like we're living in a democracy instead of a republic. Forget the fact that the voters are disgusted with them and voted Republicans in to get some changes made. Unfortunately, Dems don't take "no" for an answer; like any self-absorbed toddler, what THEY want is the most important thing and they'll do anything to get their way.

What should they have done. How about uphold the constitution of their state? Did you read the suggestions in my op/ed? Here they are again...

* Immediate forced resignation of all "escapees," and a special election to choose their replacement (not a mere selection of a new lib/dem/soc/commie by their political party)

* Jail - 5 years hard labor, or however long it takes them to pay off their hotel AND bar bill at 50 cents a day

* Ban them from holding any political office in the future

* Force them to watch a Paulie Shore Movie Marathon--for ONE MONTH!

What were they supposed to do?

Which "they?" The dems or the GOP? Both get the same answer. Have enough spine to do what your oath requires you to do even if it's not comfortable! Even if it jeapardizes some of your own personal interests. When anybody runs for public office the interest of the public superceeds self-interest the MINUTE you take that oath and take your seat! The dems already showed what they were made of. Now lets see if the GOP deserves the trust we've put in them by giving them every part of Texas government except the US house.

I think this post says nicely what the mood of Texas conservatives is right now. BTW Doc, well done on the editorial, I should have said that long before now.
