Personnel at a Westmoreland County wildlife rehabilitation center plan to report to state game officials that an Arnold man beat an opossum to death with a shovel when it wandered into his yard on Mother's Day.

Mel Schake, information and education supervisor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission's 10-county Southwest Region, said he hadn't yet heard about the Arnold incident but, speaking generally, said people need to realize that wildlife are protected by law.

Wonder if they will eat jawbreakers or bubblegum like prairie dogs? Dad used to feed the prairie dogs one of these because it killed them.

Hmmmm. Maybe I'll give that a try with the groundhogs in the pastures. Once something is in the barn, it might die in the hay and stink to high heaven. Probably ruin some hay, too.

Then you can carry them off the road and put them down in a safe place. Works for me. The hissing is a sham, and those long jaws full of sharp teeth are supposed to scare you off. If you don't scare, the 'possum gives up."

The possum population went through the roof in West Virginia after the Food Stamp Program was started.

Possums are definitly vermin. They and armadillos carry a protazoa that causes a very serious disease in horses. Between them, rabid coons, coyotes and deer tearing everything up, this country girl shoots on sight(except the deer, only in season). Of course, the Jack Russells do help on the smaller vermin.

It's a peculiar thing. I don't leave out crunchies, and he doesn't come around.

"Wish we had armadillos in California."

No you don't. They would destroy your state's agriculture.

They dig burrows which can break cattle's legs.

Growing up, part of the experience of visiting a friend's parent's ranch in central FL was the the evening dillo hunts with a 12 gauge. In the context of livestock, they are nothing but vermin and are shot on sight.

"Opossums ... Harmless critters. "

What's more, their body temperature is not high enough to support the rabies virus, in the unlikely event you are dumb & slow enough to get bitten (a dimocrat, maybe?)

My dog ran one down a few months back. I just flopped on it’s back and played possum.

The dog looked at me with a “what do I do now” stare.

” I usually drown the skunks, though. No sense taking chances. “

My GF’s son shot one and left it sitting beside the central AC unit all night.

The next morning was pandemonium in the house.
