WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate recognized British Prime Minister Tony Blair's support for the war in Iraq early Thursday, passing legislation to award him the Congressional Gold Medal.
Blair was one of few world leaders to support the war despite widespread opposition from within his own Labor Party and most of the British public.
The bill, passed by voice vote in a session that stretched passed Wednesday midnight, lauds Blair for having ``clearly demonstrated, during a very trying and historic time for our two countries, that he is a staunch and steadfast ally of the United States of America.''
The Congressional Gold Medal expresses national appreciation for an achievement or contribution. Recent recipients include Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Pope John Paul II and Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz.
A similar bill is pending in the House.

I was thinking this was some awesome honor for Blair until I read they gave it to a cartoonist. Jeez, isn't anything sacred?

I agree! Blair has done a fantastic job! He deserves it!

Rather than a voice vote I would have liked to get the senators on record yea or nay on this one. Someone let them off the hook.

We need another source, as this one is as credible as Debka and the Weekly World News.

I was thinking this was some awesome honor for Blair until I read they gave it to a cartoonist. They also gave it to Nancy and Ronald Reagan. It is an awesome honor.

I guess a guy who makes cartoons that arent the least bit funny is grounds for a national award for helping America...

I read they gave it to a cartoonist. Jeez, isn't anything sacred? Right on "T". Next thing you know, they'll be given away as prizes in Cracker Jack...or worse...awarded to clintoon an carter!!
To: areafiftyone
Guess they didn't want Byrd-brain to embarrass them by having him vote NO, hence the voice vote.

The bill, passed by voice vote in a session that stretched passed Wednesday midnight, Daschle had to have gone home. Otherwise it would have been filibustered.

In honor of JAYSON Blair (false AND plagiarized):
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate recognized Forner NYT journalist Jayson Blair's support for Iraq early Thursday, passing legislation to award him the Congressional Gold Medal.
Blair was one of countless "mainstream" jornalists to oppose the war despite reality and common sense.
The bill, passed by voice vote in a session that stretched passed Wednesday midnight, lauds Blair for having ``clearly demonstrated, during a very trying and historic time for our two countries, that he is a typical lying POS NYT reporter.''
A similar bill is pending in the House.
