Calling all techies: IP address abuse
www.waynermiller.com ^ | 05/15/03 | m1-lightning

Posted on 05/15/2003 8:37:32 AM PDT by m1-lightning

I recently posted a message to a local message board and have recieved an abusive reply from an individual. The host of the website (Wayne R. Miller) obviously can't get rid of him/her because Wayne just keeps deleting the messages from this individual. He has been harrassing this website for several months now. He uses different login names such as Porcupine, Punky Brewster, Mediaman, and Hodaddy. The problem is that this individual uses multiple isp's. He posts insigative comments under his Illinois Century Network ip address and then comes back with abusive comments under free trial isp's such as AOL, Earthlink, and AT&T. The abusive messages can be read under the "Riverplex" messages at www.waynermiller.com

Here is info on a couple of his isp's:

I can't be 100% sure it's the same guy but i'm 99% sure just by the number of people who post. Is there anyone that knows how to get this guy's personal info (name, home address) and even know how to ban this guy entirely from a website to be sure he's not coming back under a different name?

I am a network Admin, in laymans terms, not impossible, but very difficult. If he uses High speed internet connection (like Cox.net) then nabbing the perp is easy, but when using dial-up ISPs then it is nearly impossible. When Dialing in the server assigns an IP address at the login, once you log off, you release the IP to be used at another time. The ISP can and does have record of the logged in user using that IP address. It takes a court order to get it. Thanks to DHCP, Proxy servers and Firewalls, it is close to impossible to nab them.

Why doesn't Wayne Miller contact Illinois Century Network and discuss the problem with them?

Freepers should not tell "ml-lightning" how to track a person down in this thread.

Contact the Illinois Century Network; being a state govt. run network, I'm sure that they would be more than happy to nail an abuser.

You can't really, but changing the site over to one requiring a sign-in to post, with verification of email address before posting also, will slow him down and make it a bit more difficult to spam the site.

Post Nuke is a good FREE website program (PHP/MySQL based) with admin changeable permission systems.

Example:
http://focus.gohotsprings.com
http://school.gohotsprings.com

a bit more restrictive is:
http://www.fineartscenter.us/arts

I have the permissions set for unregistered to submit news (admin has to approve) add comments, vote in polls, and view most other. but to add to the politician address book or calendar you must be registered. The same can be set up for forums (permissions in forums can be mixed)

More than what I can put down here: you can look on http://www.postnuke.com for more info

or email me here

No offense, but if the guy is just posting stuff on a messageboard, what's the big deal? So long as he isn't revealing personal information about you, why get in such an uproar over the comments of some dopey guy

John Robinson might have some ideas--I know he's always having to zap a DU troublemaker or two. And of course Eschoire...

He doesn't post abuse under Illinois Century Network address. It's a hunch that it's the same guy.

I visited the Wayne Miller website and I read the threads on the message board. I am not too sure about the contents you were refering, I didn't see anything different than I have seen here on FR. Only the fact the the Message Board looked strickingly similar to DU. The responses seem to come from the same individual. The mannerisms, the retorts and the general body of the comment. If Wayne is the master of his board, all he has to do is Ban all of those names and remove the threads...(Just like what happens to most of us freepers that hit DU:)) I notice that your ID is close to the "Lightning Man" referenced in those messages..any relation?

IGNORE THEM

That would be a good solution except that everyone else reads the posts as well and it's a little embarrassing knowing my personal information is listed under my login name and all of the posters live in my area. I guess the only way to post anything would be to put fake personal info like this guy has been doing.

Sounds personal. Are you sure he doesn't live in your building?

I'm sorry, what do you mean by "it's just instigative?"

I read the posts in question, I really think you're wasting your time spending more than 5 seconds sweating this. The guy has a different POV than yours and he's pretty rude about it, but taking steps to get him permanently banned from a site you don't own or trying to find out who he is seems like a lot of work for a troll
