The D.C. Chapter of Free Republic invites all FReepers and lurkers in good standing to join us tomorrow at the Washington, D.C. bureau of The New York Times as we stand with Accuracy in Media to call for accountability at journalism's 'paper of record'--starting with the firing of Executive Editor Howell Raines.
For better or worse, The Times has a longstanding place as the agenda-setter for the rest of the media. Under the management of Mr. Raines, the credibility of the paper has been all but destroyed. Reporters, editors and columnists have been allowed to ride roughshod over the truth and facts from the front page to the last page.
The exposure of the massive fraud perpetrated upon the paper and the public by reporter Jayson Blair is only the most egregious example of the irresponible culture allowed to flourish under Mr. Raines.
Observers of all political persuasions have noted the rapid decline in the reliability of The Times and the corrosive effect that is having on the reporting of the major stories of this momentous era in America.
As Executive Editor, Mr. Raines must be held accountable for the lack of rigorous standards for truthfulness and accuracy at The Times by paying with his job for the damage his mismanagement has caused not just to The Times, but to the American people.
When: Thursday, May 15 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Where: The Washington, D.C. bureau of The New York Times, 1627 I Street, NW (the Army Navy Club building.)
Bring: Signs and umbrellas (it may rain.)
As always, the D.C. Chapter's rules for protesting will be in effect: No profanity, no violence, no racism, no provocations, obey the law and treat all law enforcement officers with respect.
TOPICS: Activism/Chapters; Announcements; US: District of Columbia
KEYWORDS: accountability; aim; dcchapter; falsification; howellraines; jaysonblair; mediafraud; medialies; mrc; newyorktimes; nyt; plagiarism; thenewyorktimes

We are honored to be working with Accuracy in Media on this. They've been working many years to hold the media accountable and have done great work.

You can bet Mr. Raines conducted a "feely good" meeting today. I can hear the questions already?
"So, what are your concerns regarding your personal self?".
"Do you think you can contribute to the corrections of the errors we have made?", etc.
In short, Raines will snow them and move on.
Yes, some voices outside the building is a good idea. Wish I could be there. But thank you and other Freepers and Accuracy in Media people.

Hey, you're doing Herculean work at the battlements.
Consider having Raines stay put where he can do the most damage.

Hmmm, This tough DC Freepers, but I've got to say it. You've got to pick your battles and this ain't one. The corporate culture that hired and enabled Blair is a result of an institutional corruption that is rife within the mainstream media and in particular in the Times culture. The NYT can't and won't change until the truth is more important than their agenda. They have been credibility busted more times than Little Dick Gephart and yet the network sycophants still use them as the newspaper of record. Save it for that incredibly incompetent DC city government. Geez Louizeez how do you live in that baby clinic of a city.

Thanks. The D.C. Chapter has been persistent and effective. It's a team effort--and the team rocks!

Bump - fingers crossed that the rain holds off until after the freep. If not, at least we have umbrellas just in case someone takes offense again that we are protesting outside the NY Times and lobs a raw egg or two in our direction! (Marylander -- do you remember when we protested James Bennett in December 1998?)

How do I live in D.C.? Very carefully....badabump!
I appreciate your thoughts on this. I believe they need to hear from the American public on this. Trying to get them to change their ways is a worthy endeavor, IMHO.

The DC Freeper crowd is to be commended in the good work they are doing. They are superb representatives of the Free Republic philosophy. No disrespect, just a viewpoint from the red counties.

From the meeting today: "I'm here to listen to your anger, wherever it's directed. I know that our institution has been damaged, that I accept my responsibility for that, and I intend to fix it," editor Howell Raines told staffers"
Did I call that one or what? Now go back to my #3 post and they are the questions he asked.
And after the questions he will answer bla bla bla and move on. Howell is an absolute dictator and must go. The problem is, there is no one the trow him out.
BTW, what parent calls their son Howell?

Somebody else tipped me off to it this afternoon. I can't wait to read the report of another incredibly successful One Man FReep by Doctor Raoul.
