Duncanville students suspended for video

Band members reportedly bared breasts on tape

05/13/2003

By HERB BOOTH / The Dallas Morning News

Eight Duncanville High School band students have been suspended from classes for taking part in a video where girls bared their breasts, a district official said Monday.

Seven girls and one boy – all juniors and seniors – were sent to Summit Education Center, the district's alternative school, Duncanville school Superintendent Jerry Cook said. Some of the students admitted participating in the video, he said.

Karla Oliver, the Duncanville school district's director of community relations, said the video was shot during an out-of-town competition. The band was in Corpus Christi the weekend of May 3 when a chaperone saw some female band members reviewing a video playback on a camera.

Ms. Oliver said no district officials reviewed the videotape because it was destroyed.

"That's still a point of contention. We don't have any proof that it happened. There's been a lot of rumor and hearsay," Ms. Oliver said. "I've had quite a few calls today about it."

Dr. Cook said the investigation includes a look at the chaperones on the trip, many of whom are parents. One of the chaperones allegedly destroyed the tape, he said.

Ms. Oliver said the chaperone who discovered the video was making a room check. She said there was one chaperone for every 12 or so students on the trip.

She said more students could be referred to the center because the district is still collecting information about the incident.

In general, Ms. Oliver said, a three-day suspension to the center is not uncommon. She said she didn't know how long the students would stay.

She said that if a suspension lasted longer than the number of school days left in the academic year, students would have to continue their suspension next year.

Duncanville's marching band, with about 400 members, won the 5A 2002 State Marching Band contest in November.

Officials said Duncanville High principal Mike Chrietzberg and his staff are investigating.

"We have an outstanding band program," Dr. Cook said. "This [video] is an inappropriate decision that is not reflective of the entire band."

Much ado about nothing?

I don't know about you, but judging from the female band members I my school, I don't think I would even want to see their breasts.

The bus to Marching Band pageants used to be the biggest grope-fest of the school year. That someone got it on tape is not surprising.

Marching band members often have to go to extreme lengths to try to counter their nerdy image.

Are you referring to the story or to the band members breasts?

They don't call them "band geeks" for nothing.

Actually, I was referring to the story, but thinking back at some of my fellow band members...I just don't know.

Have to admit we have a few band nerds and a couple of fairly popular band kids. (I know, it's hard to believe the last part.) They'd never pull anything like that because our Band Director puts the fear of God into these kids at the beginning of each season. He's a drill sergeant.

I would expect this from the choir kids. Then we did have a similar situation a few years ago with cheerleaders....

Hey, people who think the band kids are geeks were never in the band. It's been a long time, but I do remember those band trips. Loads 'o Fun.

True. Band geeks get a bad rap in HS, then years later we all send our kids to take music lessons from them.

"True. Band geeks get a bad rap in HS, then years later we all send our kids to take music lessons from them."

As I remember, some of the prettiest girls in my HS were in the band. I also remember that the band trips were massive make-out sessions on the band bus. The chaperones, at least on the way home from games and the like, were sound asleep and always at the front of the bus.

Overnight trips were another story altogether. Funfests. Generally, the adult chaperones were having affairs with each other and the kids did what they wanted.

This videotape thing is mild.

Note: I graduated from high school in 1963. Nothing seems to have changed.

"Note: I graduated from high school in 1963. Nothing seems to have changed.

Yeah, right. Nothing has changed, actually. From reading the stories here on FR, it appears that high school kids are pretty much the same as they were then. Sexual activity was rampant back then, and probably in about the same numbers as now. We didn't have the Pill back then, so we had to be more careful, but....

Drugs? Our drug was beer. It was even easier to get then than it is now for kids. There was a little glue and paint sniffing going on, too, although I never participated. Smoking was _really_ common, but just tobacco. Grass didn't show up for a few more years.

Jocks still hassled non-jocks. Cheerleader types snubbed the rest of the girls. The class geeks kept studying. Nothing different from today.

The good old days were just like today, I'm afraid to say.
