The power of the solo sniper.
The only way to root these guys out will be to have the support of the vast majority of locals.
Firing up the building the shot came from will not work, that's what the sniper wants.

Precisely, Travis.
Offer top dollar for information leading to the wherabouts and arrest of the sniper and his support team.
Make payments in hard currency, no Saddam dinars.
This crime will be solved shortly, of that I'm sure.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

This is my nephew's unit (2nd Cav, Ft Polk, LA). He just got to Baghdad last week. My mother heard the news report and is a little nervous.

I wouldn't be so sure... there've been way too many ragheads out there protesting, they'd love to hide whoever did this. Kill them all, finish it early, I say.

excerpt from AP at 12:46pm today:
...Central Command in Qatar said it was unaware of the incident.
U.S. forces report that they trade fire with armed Iraqis almost daily across the country. Still, an incident like Thursday's -- a brazen daytime attack, apparently at very close range -- is nonetheless highly unusual even in postwar Iraq.
On Wednesday, the military said, two Iraqis shot at reconnaissance elements of the 3rd Infantry Division with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades as they traveled north of Baghdad. The unit returned fire, the military said, killing one assailant.
Also Wednesday, near the northern town of Baiji, a convoy from the 4th Infantry Division came under rifle and machine-gun fire. The unit attacked the assailants' positions and captured five individuals, weapons, and other military, Central Command said. No Americans were injured.

I hope so. And we may not even have to pay, in that a huge number of Iraqis want to lead a normal life free of state terror, and they know if we leave too soon, what will fill the vacuum will be a horror show.

This was to be expected...many of Saddams loyal troops simply surrendered under orders ..simply to fight a guerilla action later... Dont know if this is true or just propaganda but ...this article from an arab source suggests Iranians are moving into Iraqi cities.. shiites?

Also, offer rewards in US cash for information leading to the arrest of non-Iraqis who may be terrorists. The vast majority of Arab males who are not Iraqis are most likely associated with one or another terrorist group.
