The explosion occurred late Wednesday in a sleeping area, piercing a bulkhead and injuring people in the adjacent compartment. The cause was being investigated.
One Marine was taken to an Army field hospital in Kuwait with a serious arm wound and was in stable condition, the Navy said. The rest were being treated aboard the ship, and the injuries were not life-threatening, according to the Navy's Fifth Fleet (search) in Bahrain.
The issue of how and where to try Saddam is certain to be an explosive issue in Iraq, where the deposed dictator and his Baath Party (search) are still regarded with terror. Options for trying the Iraqi leader could include a world court, a U.S. proceeding or an Iraqi-convened trial.

PARIS The French defense minister is urging her countrymen to send "some messages" to prevent relations with the United States from deteriorating.
In an interview with Le Parisien newspaper, Michele Alliot-Marie (search) said that she was concerned about Americans turning against France because of its opposition to the U.S.-led war to oust Saddam Hussein.
"What is worrying are the reactions of an American public opinion heated to white hot by political and media campaigns that undermine trans-Atlantic relations," Alliot-Marie said.

Yes, here are the Democrats slamming President Bush and as we speak troops are returning home everyday. We have over five hundred troops returning to Little Rock Air Force Base today. And a soldier from the 2nd ACR (my son's old unit) was killed today in Baghdad. Byrd better shut his mouth. He is starting to really annoy me.
BAGHDAD, Iraq An American soldier was shot and killed Thursday in a bold daylight attack on a Baghdad (search) bridge, military officers said.
The soldier, who wasn't immediately identified, was killed when an unidentified Iraqi walked up to him and opened fire with a pistol, according to senior U.S. Army officers in Baghdad who had heard reports of the shooting.
The officers said the slain soldier belonged to the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (search) from Fort Polk, La.

CAMP DOHA, Kuwait Coalition forces continue to actively patrol Iraq to make it safe for humanitarian assistance operations. Recent incidents highlight the dangerous nature of their work:
Third Brigade Combat Team soldiers were fired on early May 8 in Baghdad during a regular security patrol. They returned fire and called in psychological operations personnel who used a loudspeaker and gave instructions to surrender. Several individuals walked out and were detained. No U.S. soldiers were injured in the exchange.

WASHINGTON - It's unlikely that Pfc. Jessica Lynch will ever remember what happened in Iraq when her Army convoy was ambushed and she was taken as a prisoner of war, her doctor said Thursday.
This incident has been shrouded in secrecy, with various versions only now emerging about Lynch's injuries nearly seven weeks ago and the commando raid that rescued her April 1.
