Here is the O'Reilly story:

Bill O’Reilly was emceeing an event on April 12th sponsored by the Best Friends Foundation, a non-profit that provides a curriculum and resources for children from 5th to 12th grade to make the proper decisions outside of school. During the festivities, a capella group of 6th to 8th grade boys called the Best Men was late making it back onto the stage to perform. Trying to fill the time, O’Reilly quipped, “Does anyone know where the Best Men are? I hope they’re not in the parking lot stealing our hubcaps.”

Now, 6th to 8th graders are usually not associated with the theft that O’Reilly is describing. Most adolescents who engage in criminal activity do so later in adolescence. More importantly, the boys that were the target of O’Reilly’s cheap joke were in a singing group. Anyone with a cursory understanding of the “gangsta” culture that embodies most teenage delinquency today (regardless of race) would agree that 12 year olds in doo-wop bands are not trying to make their mark through criminal activity.

So why did O’Reilly make this off-the-cuff remark? No kidding…the kids in the Best Men are black. O’Reilly stereotyped young black men with criminal activity, even though the majority of black boys under the age of 18 do not engage in criminal activity.

Many members of the crowd, according to Lloyd Grove of the Washington Post, did not hear the remark. However, Bo Derek was in attendance and acknowledged hearing the remark, although provided no additional comment. Washington news anchor Andrea Roane, after hearing the remark, was purported to have muttered, “Unbelievable.” An anonymous source added, “The well-known Republican politicians and their spouses seated at or near my table were appalled.”

I have news for Mr. O'Reilly. Every year at the high school I graduated from, there is a formal event called the 'Black Ball'. It is a school sponsored event and is for only black students. This is in addition to all other formals that EVERYONE is invited to. Now, isn't that also segregationist? Well surprise, Bill. This isn't happening in Georgia. It's happening in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Anyone see the Coulter/Estrich debate on H & C? I thought it was very entertaining. Estrich played a poor hand well, and Coulter didn't give any quarter.

I think Bill has blown this prom thing way out of proportion. And his "demands" on Gov. Purdue are way out of line.

No kidding. Did you see him last night? He was absolutely, inappropriately VICIOUS to the young female aide of Purdue's who came on to represent him. He was psycho!!!!

If your cut and paste job is accurate, then it is not O'Reilly that is spinning this out of control. How thin is the skin these days, anyway?

Let's see ... an event sponsored by a group with the aim to provide a curriculum for children to make the right decisions outside of school ... a group of boys late for the stage ... O'Reilly quips off the cuff that he hopes they aren't out stealing hubcaps, the very type of activity the curriculum purports to prevent. Do I have that right so far? Sounds pretty benign to me. Doesn't anyone have a sense of humor any more? In context, uncolored [!] by any racial prejudice, it was a pretty witty remark.

Instead, the PC crowd jumps to all sorts of conclusions, deciding that the remarks are racist since the singing group late for the stage is black / African-American / whatever [see yesterday's baseball thread, I can't keep this straight anymore]. I think we need a hyper-sensitivity alert on this one. Who is the real racist here?

Besides, Boortz and O'Reilly both rate pretty high up on my blowhard meter. I'm surprised both egos could fit in the same room. That said, BO is not guilty on the hubcap thing. The SOB remark is something else, though.

I was just wondering if you agreed with the phrase as applied to Boorze. I thought O'Rielly argued on some pretty solid ground, in that the party was planned on school time, in the school, which would make it against the law. The SOB part was beeped out and was a retort to Boorze for a cheap shot he took at O'Reilly.

Agreed...

O'Reilly is no where near the thinker or "mover/shaker" he believes himself to be..

He goes after some High School kids, having a PRIVATE segregated dance --- and tries to impose his "moral" judgement.. It's not justified...

If O'Reilly really wanted to do something useful and needed - there are far more attractive and necessary targets he COULD go after...

But, No -- O'Reilly goes after the "low hanging fruit"...kids in High School..

He has become VERY VERY tiresome.... F'em..

O'reilly comes up with some really off the wall remarks. The other night he commented on how Algore would have been as tough on terrorism as GWB because he would have been as angry as GWB was over the 911 attacks.

Arrogant vs arrogant. Can't listen to either of them. Their approaches are too simplistic.

Sorry. I have had my hubcaps stolen by 10 year old kids.

"I thought O'Rielly argued on some pretty solid ground, in that the party was planned on school time, in the school, which would make it against the law."

That's tantamount to saying that a "senior" party organized at school but to held at your house when your parents leave is a "school function". Bunk. Boortz was right, this was a private party. There were numerous "black only" parties held in the area and in the Atlanta area. This has happened in every community in the South for decades. Do you need the government to hold your hand too? Do you need to have the man with the gun come into your home to make sure you associate with the "correct" people and not of your choosing? The idea that this was "against the law" in any way is assinine and childish.

I agree with you. I just pasted the story to inform people who hadn't heard about it.

These stories don't mean a whole lot to me. My congressman belongs to the "Black Congressional Caucus". So I'm not going to get worked up over a prom or party down in Georgia or Bill O'Reilly telling jokes when my own representitive belongs to a segragrationist organizantion that supports taking money from me for repreations.

......... too bad that the Libertarian party is run by morons instead of people with his beliefs......

I take it you've never heard Mr. Boortz talking about Christianity. To put it politely, he no friend to the Religious Right.

At one time I couldn't get enough of O'Reilly (He's even read TWO of my e-mails at the end of his show). I still think he brings up many topics that should be discussed (illegal-immigration, government corruption). But alas, your right, he's dug himself a deep hole. What a disappointment.

I watch Kudlow and Cramer at that time--they never have fools for guests. If that show drags, I'd rather watch SpongeBob than O'Reilly.

I always associated stealing hubcaps with mexicans, not blacks!

I wouldn't know about that. Where I live the whole car is stolen.
