Six injured in another MILF attack in Philippines
An explosion in the Philippines ripped through a gymnasium used as evacuation centre, wounding six evacuees, including a seven-year-old boy on Monday night.
Chief Inspector Gliserio Ragados said the attack was perpetrated by suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels operating on the fringes of Pikit town, North Cotabato.
He said the victims had been staying in the evacuation shelter since the start of the military-MILF conflict in Pikit last February 8.
"The victims were sleeping when MILF rebels fired an M-79 grenade launcher, which exploded at the roof of the gym. The victims were injured from falling debris," Mr Ragados said.
The attack occurred a day after some 100 MILF rebels rampaged into the town of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, killing 28 people and wounding several others.
The rebels also held hostage a number of civilians who were used as human shields by the retreating MILF. All hostages, except eight, were rescued by pursuing soldiers.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo branded the Siocon attack as an act of terrorism and had offered a 50 million peso reward for the arrest of top MILF leaders, including chairman Hashim Salamat.
