Daschle Does D.C. - Minority Leader Livin' Large (in $2.25 million seven-bedroom house)

Daschle Does D.C.

Who's buying, who's selling in the world of high-end real estate:

Minority Leader Livin' Large

The honorable gentleman from South Dakota.

Senator Tom Daschle may earn a meager salary of $171,900, but together with lobbyist wife Linda, he's got enough to live large. The Daschles are currently under contract to buy a $2.25 million seven-bedroom house on Washington D.C.'s ritzy Foxhall Road, according to local sources. The property itself is described as a French country colonial home, with four stories, and a 12,855 square-foot yard with a heated pool. The home the Daschles are selling is a considerably more modest three-bedroom $739,000 townhouse.

Daschle, who suffered an acute case of foot-in-the-mouth-disease last month when he said President George W. Bush "failed so miserably at diplomacy that we're now forced to go to war," later admitted that his criticism was ill timed. Now he's busy extinguishing another fire: This one's in South Dakota, where the diocese of Sioux Falls requested he remove references to his standing as a member of the Catholic Church from his biography and campaign documents, according to a Weekly Standard report. The diocese reportedly believes Daschle's pro-choice stance conflicts with his Catholic faith.

From El Rushbo -

Daschles Buy Two Million Dollar Home, But No Tax Cut for You

Senator Tom Daschle and his wife, big money airline lobbyist Linda Daschle, have just purchased a seven-room house valued at $2,250,000 in DC. (Tom says he paid a humble $1.9m.) Not bad for a public servant who earns around $170,000 a year. It makes you realize why the pair doesn't release their income tax reports.

Tom & Lin have a huge pool of money in the bank even as they're pushing taxes on that which would help you accumulate wealth: income. I guess Linda is doing pretty well lobbying the government to give out money to the airlines even as they're losing billions, declaring bankruptcy, firing workers and demanding employee give backs. I don't begrudge anyone buying a nice house - and that's the point: the Democrats do.

They don't want you getting yours even as they lavish millions on luxury. Your tax bill can never go down so you can put a little money away, because Daschle knows how to spend your money better than you do. There's no tax on the wealth of Democrats like John Kerry ($675 million), but there is a tax on wealth creation: the income tax. The Democrats don't want you creating your own wealth.

They want you poor and dependent and looking to the government when you need to buy a house, etc. It's sad to say but it's true. The way they've set it up, there is never a time for tax cuts. When there's a surplus, they say we can't "waste it" on tax cuts for people whose overpayment of taxes caused the surplus. When there's a deficit, they say the government can't "afford" to do with less so America's families will just have to tighten their belts. It's hypocrisy, and we're here to say so.

Somehow, if Daschle ceases to be a senator, I get the feeling he is not moving back to South Dakota. As some wag once said, they never go back to Pocatello. I can't really blame them.

"I can't really blame them." Nor can I, however for a different reason....they would be "persona non gratis" in S. Dakota, I believe, and he knows it. I, however, could not stand living in DC.....I'd rather be in Pocatello.

But the reason he can afford it is because his wife helped Boying rip us off. By leasing planes instead of buying them.

Yeah, but this is a guy who continually demonizes "the rich", but as he propagandizes, he avoids that fact that his definition of rich is two working parents with college degrees.

He deserves critism for his hypocrisy and lies.

I dislike the guy but this is America. If he earned the money legitimately and can afford it, he has every right to buy it. If he didn't then he needs to go to jail. Better? :')

Well, it depends how he made the money. Most of it is probably from his wife's lobbying, which has been extremely sleazy. Among other things, it led to the deaths of three forest service workers. It's very doubtful if anyone would pay her millions for advice if her hubby didn't have a very influential job he can use to do them favors.

Since Daschle's chances in the next election are iffy, this move suggests to me that if he loses he probably plans to stay in DC with his wife and run a lobbying business.

from Taxi Driver...

Senator Daschle/Senator Palantine: Walt Whitman, that great American poet, spoke for all of us when he said: 'I am the man. I suffered. I was there.' Today, I say to you, We Are The People, we suffered, we were there. We the People suffered in Vietnam. We the People suffered, we still suffer from unemployment, inflation, crime and corruption.

See, this is what I'm talking about. I think the guy is a sleaze. Why did yall vote him in, anyway? :') but people who work hard and better themselves shouldn't have to be concerned about buying a nice house because someone of a lower income can't. It's like the harder you work, the more the government takes away to redistribute.
