Question: Elizabeth Taylor said she was going to make her "swan song" at this year's Academy Awards. Why didn't she show up? - Doris Friedman, Harrison, N.Y.
Answer: "I was looking forward to the Oscars but decided at the last moment not to go," the 71 year old screen legend tells us. "I support our troops in Iraq, and I thought it inappropriate and disrespectful to celebrate while people were being killed."

I found the above tidbit in the Sunday newspaper Parade Magazine section (the Personality Parade page, where the staff answers questions people have about celebrities) a few weeks ago and just had to share it. I did wonder why Ms. Taylor didn't show up at the Oscars. Just like another onscreen legend, Charlton Heston, truly a class act!

I do not believe her answer.

Me, too. Still, if this is a lie, its effect is the
same as if it were the truth. I don't believe her, but the
fact she used something paradigmatic as her
excuse is curious.
