Bush faces war now at home Big opposition to tax cut, other domestic priorities

There were no protesters aboard the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln.

The immaculately scrubbed deck-turned-television-studio contained no opposing members of Congress, no dissenting economists, no partisan enemies, wobbly allies or out-of-work techies to muddle the president's triumphant moment.

The roars of approval from thousands of sailors framed by the calm blue sea provided an apple-pie backdrop to what appeared to many to be a magic moment. Unfortunately for Bush, the magic moment is not one from which he can govern.

Rep. Mike Honda, the Democratic congressman whose district the president will visit this morning, declined an invitation to stand beside the commander in chief, saying "I don't think it would be appropriate" to share the podium at a Santa Clara defense facility where Bush will promote his tax cuts.

Isn't that special.

You said it. From the front page to the letters to the editor, they have worked themselves into an anti-Bush frenzy. It's a little wierd.

An ABC/Washington Post poll released Thursday showed that while Americans express strong confidence in Bush's leadership skills and job performance, only a quarter favor Bush's tax cut over more government spending, and a majority of respondents better trust Democrats to create new jobs.

Ok - either me fellow Americans are dumber than I give them credit for, this poll was taken in a liberal area with mostly liberals taking the poll, or the results are skewed by the ABC/Washington Post source.....

Either way, I just can't believe that people would feel this way. Spend, spend, Spend.....of course the cash to spend comes from somewhere - out of the pockets of those who pay taxes. Who will benefit most from increased government spending - those who don't pay taxes.

I don't know about anyone else here on this board - but if I were to be the beneficiary of a tax cut, I'm going to either spend it, or use it to pay down some of my debt. Either way, this will contribute to the economy.

Hey, I've got an idea! Let's make the tax cut VOLUNTARY. If a person doesn't believe that a tax cut is needed, then they can pay in the pre-cut total. For those of us who believe in a tax cut should be able to take that cut. Let's see how many liberals are being honest.

His economic plan is short of votes, his prescription drug plan is going nowhere, his energy proposals are on hold and his judicial nominees are being blocked by the Senate's Democratic minority.

What he meant to say was.. "Other than that, he's a nice guy, but he's no FDR."

Thank God. ;-)

It's OK if a demRat is in the White House and Americans get killed by our sworn enemies, but Look Out when a Republican is in office and that happens. The demRATic approach remains the same, Delay,Deny,Stall,Divert,Obstruct..

Personally, The demRats and all who defend their "rights" to destroy lead this nation and it's sovereignty into oblivion can go to Hell. The Clintons and their ilk are holding the door wide open for them to follow.

Okay, Homer J,

I'm STILL PISSED at W for signing McCain-Feingold, and I'M VERY SUSPICIOUS about the assault weapons ban he claims he will sign, but I have to admit that watching him kick the @sses of his opponents is both entertaining and impressive.

The country doesn't want a tax cut? Bulls--t. He doesn't have the votes in Congress? Bulls--t. All of these morons will disappear into the mist when the tax cut passes.

Say what you will about W. I was sure I wouldn't vote for him come 2004. Watching him in action makes me want to rethink my position. You have to admire the guy's cajones.

I had a similar idea a few years ago. It went like this....all those Senators who vote AGAINST the tax cuts, don't get them for their constituents if the tax cuts should become law. So tax cuts for Montana but not for California, as we have Botox Barbara and Dianne FineSwine who would rather die than let taxpayers keep their money.

If such a deal were to happen, the backlash against the No voting Senators would be a beautiful sight, would it not?

The Chronicle is a very left wing newspaper. It shows up not only on their editorials but in their artciles as well. The writer of this article, Marc Sandalow, is one of the worse. This paper is virtually a house organ for the Democratic Party.

Great idea. We could even pre-spend it, save it, or invest it by ordering in advance or paying down debt in advance. Then the results could be calculated. If, in order to get mine back, I have to pledge an oath, I will. Of course that won't work with liberals. Oaths mean nothing, all is relative. They could promise not to take a tax cut and then demand it as equality. Who cares? They will probably not put it in a mattress but spend it, save it, or invest it, all economy boosters.

And not the only one by a long shot. That was the purpose of the Campaign Finance "Reform" Law, to leave them as the only voice 60 days before an election. Why did the Republicans support it and why did Bush sign it? I don't know but I have learned to never underestimate (misunderestimate? :-)) Carl Rove.

Two points:

1. This morning, Bush returns to the mainland to promote his tax-cut plan in Silicon Valley, where even his post-war swagger may not be enough to overcome fierce resistance to his domestic agenda.

< sarcasm > Yep! No bias here. Such an objective statement. < /sarcasm >

2. "We welcome President Bush to Silicon Valley," Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Palo Alto, said on the eve of his arrival. "And while he's here, he should explain why saddling future generations with a $12 trillion national debt is sound economic policy."

Why is it sound economic policy to confiscate $12 trillion of our money, lady?

Now, IF ONLY the R side of the Senate would grow the same kind of cajones, we might get somewhere!

Well, I've got bad news for you fellows.

It's the elephant in the living room, and no one is talking about it.

OPEC is dead. After plaguing the petroleum industry for thirty years, artificially propping up crude prices through production quotas, rendering capital formation and the oil futures markets useless through uncertainty, OPEC died the moment that statue of Saddam went down. Russia wounded OPEC recently by not playing ball, and Iraq will not be sending anyone to Vienna for a few years.

What will this mean?

Crude prices will plummet to somewhere around fifteen dollars a barrel long before the 04 election, the world's economies will be fuel injected, and as the world's biggest petroleum user, the US economy will be turbo-charged. Tax cut or no tax cut, everything that is made and every service that is provided has an energy component, and ALL sources of energy will be impacted by the death of OPEC.

Just my opinion, I think what we are seeing in the stock markets have as much to do with this as anything else.

After the Republican landslide that will surely come in 04, no amount of Dem obstruction will suffice to stop Bush from cutting taxes, etc., etc., etc.

Dems will be very, very saddened.

Fat fu--ing chance.

Just looking at the picture of W in his flight suit makes me chuckle. It gives the finger to all of his detractors and makes him look like a regular guy to all of the regular joes out there.

Now if he can just pass the damn tax cut. And I would feel a little more comfortable if he even PRETENDS that he wants a smaller, less intrusive government. Then I might put his picture up on the wall next to Reagan's.
