nominated for the medal of honor, received the navy cross, two silver stars, purple heart, fifteen air medals, and thirty-two other awards. Just your average pilot. :-) Also the first US "all missile" ace, and the only pilot to shoot down three MiGs in one day during the Vietnam War. I'm not sure if any of the Korean War MiG killers got three in a single day or not, though I'd hardly be surprised if they had. But no names spring immediately to mind....

Howlin, are you still using this thread for the speech tonight?
To: heckler
I saw on Discovery wings, they landed a C-130 cargo plane on a carrier, just to see if it could be done. (they only did it one time). The pilot got the Navy Cross. And they ruined the landing gear. Guy in the office used to be a Marine chopper and C-130 pilot. He said he had flow that aircraft several times after those tests, and the gear was really hinky. The problem usually was that it wouldn't go down by itself, and had to be cranked down by hand. Usually in bad (bumpy) weather of course, with a bunch of airsick passengers in the back end. Guess who got to do the cranking..Yep the passengers, depending on who they were of course, especailly those just "catching a hop".

On MSNBC, Keith Olberman just asked if this trip today was to shore up Bush's bad reputation in the Texas Air National Guard. You can't be serious. Olberman = vitriol-filled idiot. If Bush discovered the cure for cancer, he'd make a crack about Bush being a frat-boy
Olberman has NO credibility. What a shame he gets a national forum to spew this venom.

Re: 1814--the libs just won't let it go.
He was released from active duty, can't remember the whole story, but the war was over, he was either campaigning for his father, or getting ready to go to grad school, and applied for release, from what I'm trying to remember now.
I don't remember all the details, but some people can't get over it.
It just kills them that he actually was a fighter pilot.

hehe.
That's okay, we need to be reminded now and then how lucky we are today...

way kool! and GW was as thrilled as the military were....that's even the best part, how the military just love him....he needed this.

How'd they get it back OFF the carrier? Turned her into the wind, backed the Herky up as far as they could, and flew it off. An empty C-130 can take off in an amazingly short distance. It was after all designed for short unimproved (read packed dirt) runways near the front lines. Add a JATO (rocket pack used for takeoff assist) and it pretty much jumps into the air, although I don't think they used the JATO to get it off the carrier. "Fat Albert" the C-130 that accompanies the Navy's Blue Angels, does a JATO takeoff for every show. It's impressive that something that big can get off the ground that fast, and then climb so steeply.

OK...I am here for the evening. Glass of wine and cheerful demeanor at the ready!
I left for the grocery after the landing and some of the picture-taking, and saw my favorite check-out gal (the Bush fan). I told her all about this event, and she said "Kid, I get chills and goosebumps just hearing about it! And what we had before...don't even make me go there!"
Ha! I love my grocery store!
To: SandyInSeattle
Apologies for any indigestion that pic caused! :)
Quite a contrast though ;)
