The first season of PBS's "American Family," in which Edward James Olmos plays the conservative patriarch of a Hispanic Los Angeles family, comes out on DVD today.

But it's his role as another patriarch that's bound to get TV viewers in their 30s and 40s talking. Olmos is filming Sci Fi Channel's miniseries remake of the late '70s TV show "Battlestar Galactica." Olmos takes over the role of Commander Adama, originally played by the late Lorne Greene.

"I was flipping channels the other day and came across the worst sci-fi movie of all time. Don't know the name of it, but it used the ships (actually the footage from Battlestar Galactica), including the Galactica and the Viper and Cylon fighters. Story had nothing to do with BSG, from what I saw. The ship was supposed to be FROM Earth. Could only stand to watch about 5 minutes of it..."

You might be thinking of the "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" movie with Gil Gerard. That one used the spacefighters, except that the Vipers were flown by the bad guys and the Cylon saucers were flown by the good guys.

I have a bad time following series after a few years. I turned on Farscape about a month ago, and Creighton had gotten to earth, now he seems gone again. And what the hell is happening on DS9 - I'm all out of synch there?

Come on, aside from the moon being knocked out of orbit, the tech displayed in it, for the time made, was pretty good and predictive. Granted, I was young, and it did get caught up in some drippy stuff, it still was kick ass for its time.

I'd hesitate to say it would still have the appeal now with todays effects.

What did you think of "UFO"?

Thats it! I remember Reb Brown in that role. It was just awful, I mean, even the "hot chicks", weren't. I mean, how hard is it to find good looking bimbo's who can't act? Darned Actors Guild...

Hey, I remember UFO, it was one of those English imports. I thought it was way cool at the time, but I was quite young..

WHAT? Cyclons look like HUMANS???? WTF!!! This is obviously just an attempt to use the BG name to make some money.... you can't not have Cyclons as big tin can looking things... those dark rooms, high gloss reflections, reverberating voices and ocilliating eyes are what make BG worth watching!!! Lord knows it wasn't the writing or acting talent!

For Shame Sci Fi, for SHAME!!!

Bring back Space Above and Beyond

I'll second that! And add my name to the 'Bring back Farscape' list.

In the ads for the new Galactica series they feature that familiar Cylon "voom voom", but it looks like nothing more than a cheat to get in the old fans. I'd rather watch Galactica 1980 instead.

Cattle Car Galactica had some pretty stupid writing although it wasn't that bad of a show.

It did have some nice female eye candy. I wonder what ever happened to that Hawaiian looking actress who had black hair and blue eyes. She was unusually pretty but seemed to drop off the face of the earth after Galactica.

Somebody needs to explain to me the Farscape thing. The show sucked. Everybody talked with stupid accents and couldn't be understood half the time, the stories were dumb, the special effect were so-so. And most importantly: the ratings were in the toilet.

Christopher Lloyd has a recurring role in Tremors, that's a big plus right there. And of course rightwing whacko Burt Gummer is right more often than he's not, which sort of gives the show a conservative bent. Though if they put the hot Latina in a water trough without a bra anymore they'll lose the "family entertainment" vote.

I've seen two (awful) Roger Corman movies with different plots and characters, but all the same special effects, spacecraft and exterior shots -- "Space Raiders" and "Battle Beyond the Stars" (the movie the effects were originally done for, and doubly awful because Richard Thomas was in it).

The British import? Loved it. Especially the babes in the mini skirts.

Hey, I was a young impressionable boy back then, and boy did they make an impression on me. ;-)
