Iraq-US-Sahhaf-wanted 04-29 0373

US forces turn down Sahhaf's surrender overtures: Arabic daily

CAIRO, April 29 (AFP) - Iraq's former information minister Mohammad Said al-Sahhaf, who denied to the end the presence of US forces in Baghdad, was turned down by US troops after trying to turn himself in, said the London-based Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Tuesday, citing a Kurdish official.

Sahhaf has been at his aunt's house in Baghdad for the past four days and had wanted US troops to arrest him so that "they can protect him" but they refused since he was not on their "most wanted" deck of playing cards, said the paper, citing Adel Murad of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

Murad said Sahhaf was in Mosul before going to Baghdad and that some PUK partisans saw him in the northern city and that he even asked some of them to intervene on his behalf with US troops, but "we told him that we didn't want to be party to this matter," the paper added.

The Kurdish official told the paper that US troops regularly patrolled near Sahhaf's hideout on Palestine Street in the Iraqi capital and that he sent some of his relatives to inform them of his wish to surrender, but they turned him down.

"Negotiations are still going on to hand him over to them," said Murad.

The Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias said on Thursday that a family claiming to be sheltering Sahhaf, reportedly in the women's section of a home in a poor neighborhood of Baghdad, had been in contact with two Portuguese journalists seeking their help in approaching US forces.

Sahhaf's daily briefings during the US-led war on Iraq made him a world celebrity. He vanished, when US forces entered central Baghdad, and may be dead but his words are still very much alive on the Web.

Among them: "My feelings, as usual, we will slaughter them all."

"Our initial assessment is that they will all die."

Low-cost Irish airline Ryanair has used his photograph in a recent advertisement campaign in the British press.

Even Sahhaf's "archenemy" US President George W. Bush said in a recent interview with NBC television that he enjoyed Sahhaf's briefings so much that he used to interrupt some of his meetings just to watch him.

Ya gotta love a president with a sense of humor!

Beware of the man who takes himself too seriously.

They should arrest him based on his entertainment value alone.

The local CBS station needs a new weather girl. Bob would be great. "There are no thunderstorms taking place the sky is very sunny for 11:30 PM. No tornadoes will enter the area, we will as usual defeat the tornadoes."

LOL, this is the story I've been waiting to see. I was hoping for a big histrionic surrender with a gaggle of press, with Sahhaf turning himself in to a group of U.S. soldiers, but being publicly turned away to a chorus of laughter.

Baghdad Bob: "I am not surrendering. I am infiltrating the camp of the enemy pig-dogs to gather further intelligence for our glorious regime. A curse on the moustaches of those who would think otherwise."

Poor Baghdad Bob is clueless as to the amount of money he could make staging his "surrender" as part of an SNL skit. He needs an agent. Think of the possibilities. SNL actors dressed as Boy Scouts on a field trip and B.Bob comes out to surrender. Or SNL actors dressed a French soldiers and when B.Bob comes out surrender, they get into an argument with him because they want to surrender to him. How about other ideas? This could be fun.

This guy could do commercials around the world. How about real Master Card skits? Vacation resorts? Remember those Izuzu ads a few years ago with the guy lying about everything? Batteries, cable news ads,the list is endless...

"I have been under arrest, tried, and convicted of war crimes. I am currently in permanent exile in a Central American country, where I am forced to write a new group of reality shows for ABC for scale. Fortunately, this experience has been a positive for both me and my wife -- Morgan Fairchild."

I agree completely. This guy has no idea of the endorsements waiting for him if he could get to the US. Only in America could the propaganda face of an enemy become a rich celebrity in a short time.
