The NEIC epicenter is RIGHT on the border between GA and AL; if it was in GA it would be the largest quake ever in GA. Alabama had one estimated (roughly, numbers get worse as you go back in time) at 5.1 in 1916.

This is probably as large a quake as the immediate area can generate.

Reelfoot Rift: Missouri, Arkansas, Tennesee, Kentucky, and Illinois.

New Madrid fault in an ancient rift, and 83% of earthquake activity occur in ancient rift areas.

Just because recent history doesn't support active earthquake movement in this area, does not mean it cannot produce more frequent earthquakes at a greater magnitude.

Good news is that we are all in the same boat, but Los Angeles is in the worst boat. Their earthquakes are plate-tectonic types, and someday they will slide up to Alaska. Serves them right.

"Doraville, just a country in the city!"

"Doraville, touch of country in the city!"

I lived 2 miles from Doraville in the '60s when this song was king.
It was a little town full of 'good ole boys' that just became another signpost of never-ending Atlanta up Buford Hwy near Chamblee.

It retained some of it's rural feel....thus a touch of countey even though it was nestled smack-dab in the "Big A".

Now, now.. I wouldn't be too rash here on Alaska.. them Alaskans are nice folks. LOL

That's a few hundred million years away anyway, I think..

All the major faults are overdue.. tho. 5-5-05 ;-o

Be Prepared.

Charleston got hammered by a quake in 1886. Lots of good pics here...

In Dallas, West of Marietta. Felt for at least 20 secs right around 5 am. My cats went nuts about 10 minutes before, I went back to sleep and dreamed I was falling out of the bed. Hubby was in bathroom when happened. We heard "rumble". At first I thought it was thunder.

Unless there's another song I don't know about, your time-line is a little off. Atlanta Rythym Section's "Doraville" was late 1970's.

I lived in 30360, which is the Doraville post office, for 10 years in my first house, but we were over right next to Dunwoody, well west of PIB. Before PIB turned into a stretch of Interstate.

Earthquake? Oh, that's what that was! I thought it was my big fat cat jumping in bed with me during a thunderstorm.
