Why am I getting pop-ups

FR (Latest Posts) is my home page, and I open 2 browsers whenever I start my day or whenever I shut down and start up again.

I have Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper Companion on my computer, but I have to turn it off to get the 2nd browser to launch. After I've launched both browsers and before I can turn Panicware back on, I GET A STINKING POP-UP AD!

I know FR doesn't do advertising, so where in the world are these ads coming from? Any ideas? Anyone else having this problem?

I suggest you set the properties on your cookies file to 'read only ' as well. This may prevent you from getting into some sites.

I use www.panicware.com "popupstopper" and ad-aware (www.lavasoft.nu) to delete any spyware, though I've heard some gets through. I have no problems with multiple windows, though mine starts when windows starts.

It used to be on FR that articles posted carried the entire content ... now, after a tease intro sentence or paragraph we get the "for the rest of the article" press the button option. This is where I experience the highest incidence of "drop downs" ... annoying, of course, but not nearly as annoying as the wait to log on to the new site.

How do you clean out your cookies folder

Are you using IE? If so, the process looks like this:

First, go up to the top of the browser and locate the button marked "tools". Click that. A dropdown box will appear; the very last listing in it should be "Internet options". Scroll down and highlight it; click on it. A popup will appear. It should be open to the "General" tab.

About halfway down the popup is a button marked "delete cookies". If you click this, you will get an "are you sure" prompt. If you say yes, ALL cookies will be deleted. This means logging in again to all your favorite sites like FR.

Another way is to look on that same popup window, instead clicking "settings". ANOTHER popup will appear. On it choose "view files". Your Temporaray Internet Files folder will open. It contains not only cookies but web pages, graphics, etc. You can pick and choose what to delete.

You should make a regular practice of policing your cookies. Before closing after each session, look at them (in I.E. tools, internet options, settings, view files) and group select and delete all you do not recognize. I keep around a dozen that I know have password or site registration info for places I regularly use.

A single session can add 50 or more new ones that I have no need for whatever. If I go back to a site, they can give it to me again for that session only, but there is no reason to keep it around unless the site uses some obnoxious registration system. Website designers use of both cookies and pop ups is extremely abusive, as bad as spam.

Click on on "Tools" on your menu bar.

Click on "Options" or "Internet Options" (depends on what Windows you have)

Click on "Delete cookies" "Delete files", and "Clear history". Clearing all 3 will speed up your computer for the most part, especially if you have never done it before. You may not have all 3 for certain versions of Windows.

Then set "Day to keep pages in history" to zero or as low as possible.

Then check on Defragging the drive, you may have so much new open space on the drive that it could go even faster with a defrag.

Thanks for the link to tech tv. I have had the annoying popups and I have followed the instructions given. Hoping this clears up the problem. Watch tech tv every now and again, they offer good tips on the show.

Yes I am getting ALOT of pop-ups just for doing nothing online but coming here. If I look down I see MANY that appear out of no where and say SAVE. I click on them to exit out each one I am sick of it.

No it should not stop those kind of messages. It will stop printer notifications and such on a network. I turn this off all the time at work because it will sometimes kill an automated test script when running.
