Why am I getting pop-ups
Posted on 04/28/2003 5:27:39 PM PDT by ru4liberty
FR (Latest Posts) is my home page, and I open 2 browsers whenever I start my day or whenever I shut down and start up again.
I have Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper Companion on my computer, but I have to turn it off to get the 2nd browser to launch. After I've launched both browsers and before I can turn Panicware back on, I GET A STINKING POP-UP AD!
I know FR doesn't do advertising, so where in the world are these ads coming from? Any ideas? Anyone else having this problem?
HELP!

get AdAware, or Spybot - Search & Destroy SpyBot seems to be much more thorough.
To: ru4liberty
Run AdAware and SpyBot Search & Destroy. Otherwise it's virtually impossible to get that junk out of your Registry.
SpyBot will direct you to a related program, if you hit the Innoculate button, called SpyWare Blaster. After removing the junk, it's a good idea to innoculate, regularly update, and use SpyWare Blaster to keep more Spyware from installing itself without your knowledge.

I use both. I have had an instance or two that one did not catch that the other one did.

Switch your browser to Opera v7. It has a built in pop-up stopper.

>>Adaware...Did they complete the new version?
Yes. And they update detection files regularly - I've updated mine twice this week.

No problem, I've got a lot of experience in this area. I can't stress enough the importance of having a firewall. I check my logs every day and see a hacker trying to poke through every time.

Gosh, people, I never have this problem using Opera in a linux operating system.

How do you clean out your cookies folder? 1) Do a search for cookies and open the file
2) read titles of files and delete

Do you buy Spybot or is it a freeware? It is free. You can download it HERE.

I am running Netscape 7.02 , It has a built in pop up blocker. very happy with it. BTW I run on a Mac, I heard the PC version has the same feature.
