DALLAS -- Democrats are flummoxed at the news that GOP strategists plan to center President Bush's re-election campaign on national security and fighting terrorism. But what Democrats should really be concerned about is that they have had so little to say on these issues.

good article...once the war is "over" expect Dems to say, it's time to move on...except Bush won't. Of course if Bush did "move on" they'd say he was neglecting national security.

"Democrats are saying its unfair to use homeland security as a Presidential election issue?

"But Enron, Halliburton, and Hillary Health Care is fine."

We have a somewhat better chance controlling the Enrons and Halliburtons if we can get some ethical politicians in office (fat chance). No matter how much money we throw at "security," if someone is willing, they can pretty much blow up, poison, and maim anywhere, anytime they want. It is difficult for me to comprehend that people believe otherwise and are willing to spend so very much money on that hope.

According to recent stories citing Republican sources close to the White House, the president's re-election team is building the campaign around homeland security and Bush's efforts to preserve it. GOP strategists have even gone so far as to shrewdly time Bush's acceptance speech at the Republican convention on Sept. 2, 2004, to coincide with the beginning of commemorations marking the third anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Next year's GOP convention just happens to be in New York City's Madison Square Garden, not far from Ground Zero.

Democrats are accusing Republicans of exploiting a national tragedy and politicizing the war on terrorism. Those are not trivial charges, and Bush's advisers told The New York Times they acknowledge that such a perception could wind up stinging Republicans in the long run.

Here is the original source of this BIASED nonsense (NY Times):

Bush's Aides Plan Late Campaign Sprint in '04

Note the part in the article where it reveals that the timing was a response to the new campaign finance laws. Note the overuse of unnamed sources, etc.

And count on Maureen Dowd to help perpetrate this lie:

Chest Banging, Here and There (Dowd alert)

This lie is taking on a new life of it's own (Thanks to the liberal media). All they have to do now is play dumb and quote each other.

You want your tax cuts, write to your congressman with this idea. Attach to the bill, a federal income tax exemption on paychecks for people in the armed services, and we will get the votes. Its a simple concept, if you are in the armed forces, you do not pay federal income taxes on your paycheck, put that idea in the tax cut package, and just slam at anyone who votes against it as un-patriotic. The media will whine and moan, but the backlash against voting against it, will be devasting.

Old playbook... doesn't Rush say that the Dems often will accuse others of doing exactly that which they themselves do...?

Besides, had Bush failed the test of leadership and bungled our nation's response to the terrorist attacks, Americans rightly would have held that against him.

Good point. If Bush had done badly in the war on terrorism, in Afhganistan or Iraq...you better believe the Democrats would make it the centerpiece of their campaign.

But because Bush has been extremely successful, the Dems cry it is unfair for it to become an election issue.
They are not only cry-babies, they are totally phoney.

Republicans may be slow learners (my greatest political frustration), but they have learned from the best.

I just hope their learning curve accelerates and that they start kicking lots of loser moron butt!

Yet, it is the Democrats who are feeling the sting, a sensation that only gets worse now that Republicans say they are prepared to spend a breathtaking $200 million to retain the presidency, roughly twice the amount it took Bush to win it in the first place.

$200 million!

And don't forget the Dems will have to spend $$$ fighting each other in the preliminaries.

Maybe Bill Clinton should donate a few dollars from his $200 million LIEbrary fund to help out.

Yeah, like dynamically changing deadlines when it suits them as happened in Florida and New Jersey.
