Ashleigh Banfield Lashes out at Own Network [Attacks Savage, NBC Distances Themselves from Comments]
Reuters Wire ^ | April 28, 2003 | Andrew Grossman

NBC News correspondant Ashleigh Banfield has ripped television news networks, including her own, for their 'glorious' coverage of the Iraq war and lack of focus on international news overall.

In a speech Thursday at Kansas State University, she also attacked NBC News for hiring right wing radio talk show host Michael Savage to do a show on MSNBC. Savage recently called Banfield a 'slut' after her reports portraying the radical Arab point of view.

Banfield, who first won notoriety for her coverage from the World Trade Center on 9/11, might be in some trouble for her comments.

In a statement issued in Friday, NBC News said, 'Ms. Banfield does not speak for NBC News. We are deeply disappointed and troubled by her remarks, and will review her comments with her. In the meantime we want to emphasize how proud we are of the journalism produced by NBC News and of the men and women who worked around the clock, even risking their lives, to bring this story to the American public.'

" I cant even rate Savage in the top 5 "

Dick Cheney had it wrong when he opted to be on 'The Savage Nation' ?

"Savage is a phony blowhard with absolutely NO entertainment value. On top of that he's a big mouthed bigot and a moron."

Oh, come on now. I think he's more like the 'Liberace' of journalism. His music may sound a little harsh at times, but he's really a gentle and caring person. How can anyone not swoon when he talks about meat balls.

The amorphous ac/dc 'Republicans' who are embarassed by conservatives when they become "too conservative" are suffocating their own party.

Rage is an acceptable response to those who want to tear down our Nation -- and Savage is serving notice.

He's not a violent man, but he knows how to fight -- and when. He also knows there's nothing to be gained by avoiding or delaying a confrontation. If you don't share his attitudes about confrontation, you have probably never had to take a stand.

Unlike the big talkers on this thread, Savage works and fights in the real world, where people know his real name, face, and address -- and he's winning big time. If you don't like what he says, stop your anonymous whining; Call him and tell him!

What is the secret of this bombast's appeal to Americans? Can you stop him by slinging mud? Will an appeal to 'moderation' bring Savage's listeners back to reality?

Stay tuned, and learn the answers.

Well, I'll admit he's more like the 'Don Rickles' of journalism at times, but that's only when 'Norman' sneaks a few words in.

The Mark Levin's and Ann Coulter's of this world are EXACTLY what we need when fighting fire with fire. They get their points accross without resorting to anti-constitutional murderous hate speech.

BULLCRAP!

How is Savages statement about liberal journalists being shot for treason any less inflammatory than Ann Coulter saying "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

What's your beef with Savage unless you have another agenda?

Savage's rants are FAR from hilarious. Pathetic is more like it. And I've been listening to Rush from day one. He was NEVER an embarrassment like Savage is. Not even close.

You have probably only listened to Salvage a very few times.I think he is hilarious, but has alot more to say than even Rush. I have listened to both for years too. Salvage is so outrageous that he gets peoples attention.

Savage is a bit tooooo extreme. I like the analogy of the right's Michael Moore. But I can handle Savage before I can handle Moore.

Savage once compare anyone who was against guns in the cockpit as being for abortion. That pissed me off. Talk about apples and oranges - that kind of screwy analogy is the kind I'm used to hearing from the left.

Abortion is life and death, period - guns in the cockpits is not, it is a preference on methods. (maybe I prefer armed stews)

I agree. Michael Savage is the stereotype we have been fighting for years. I think that's why MSNBC put him on the air. He does nothing but discredit good commentators, like Rush.

I'll admit to listening to Savage since he started in SF 8 years back... he can be entertaining but I'd be careful considering him ideologically on my side. True, he hates liberals. But back before he became national (and tapped into flyover country)he condescended to conservatives regularly, when he wasn't outright mocking them as gap-toothed hicks.

During 2000 election cycle he courted one of Gore's campaign managers on the air because he was angry the Bush people didn't publically credit him with the term "compassionate conservative". It was embarrassing & many of us won't forget some of the stuff he said.

I remember Banfield at Jeb Bush's victory party in Miami...I have a feeling that there were other stories she would have rather reported that night. When things were going so good that night me and some friends turned our signs for Jeb towards the media. It was basically like freeping the media. Lot's of fun. That Hummer guy from CNN was there too.

I too am personally sick of middle of the road, and politically correct Republicans. Salvage might not be their style but he is reaching alot of people they could never reach. He talks very straight about the truth, and the truth isn't pretty.

Savage is no such thing.

He's the right's rabble-rouser and firebrand, something sorely needed on our side.

I'm tired of mealy-mouthed, milquetoast conservatives like Hannity and Rush. They are the voice of the "nice guy" conservative, and that's well and fine.

But Savage is smash-mouth conservativism and its been a long time coming. The right needs someone to take the same agit-prop tactics of the left, the same "in your face" tactics of the left, and give it right back to them.

Savage is not an embarrassment to the right, far from it. He's a much needed counterpunch to the left's viciousness.

Hannity and Rush, etc, are all well and fine, and they attract the timid, spineless, suburban soccer-mom crowd.

Savage is on a whole other level, and it's a godsend to our side as we've been lacking someone with his ability to rip the left.

You are right, no ones cares about Savage as is evidenced by his eight weeks at #1 on the NY Times Bestseller list. Are you Ashlee's even dumber cousin?

Stupid? Define stupid? I'll take a stab at your definition. "Stupid = Any loud voice, expression of a strong opinion, or display of anger and outrage".

Savage "is like a mean drunk"? How? Because he has fire? Because he actually shows some passion for his side? For his country? Against a radical left that he believes is destroying something he loves? That's "a mean drunk"?

So the left gets to pull their vicious sh!t, and put all their vile hate for America, on display, they get to work night and day for the destruction of this country, and our side is supposed to play patty-cakes with them, and present nice, safe, timid, tame reasoned debate all the time?

Bullsh!t.

Savage is exactly what we need. It's too bad if the timid little suburban mom crowd can't take the "anger". Savage isn't looking for you as a member of his audience. Savage is looking for people like myself as his audience - people who are tired of the "nice guy" attitude and tactics of our side, while the vicious pr!cks on the other side constantly get the upperhand because they're louder and agitate at a higher decible.

No thank. I want someone like Savage who isn't afraid to scream back, show the same rage, and who'll kick 'em in the b@lls.
