Well we better figure this one out quick. I am in California and my vote will definately go to Bush (if I have the opportunity to do so.)

The Washington Post is wishfully thinking.

D.C. I wouldn't worry about. The other two are matters for concern.

Sounds to me as if we should have taken care of the New Jersey problem with Lautenberg and said "Enough is Enough"

The GOP's unusually late nominating convention -- it does not begin until Aug. 30 -- is the problem. Bush is not scheduled to accept his party's nomination until Sept. 2, 2004. That falls after the deadline for certifying presidential candidates not only in Alabama, but also in California, the District of Columbia and West Virginia. There are bills in the Alabama legislature to move its deadline from Aug. 31 to Sept. 5. But if, for some reason, they don't pass, the president would be forced to run there as a write-in candidate.
I'm sure that this problem will be brought to the attention of the needed officials before this get blown out of proportion.

The plan seems to be to not spend a dime in California by writing off the state, and to make the Democrats look bad. What are Bush's chancing out there even with his popularity, that will surely decline by election day?

There is no democracy in CA. I hope Alabama and West Virginia don't play the same game.

If it comes down to it, I suppose the GOP could change its rules to have the nomination officially made around August 15, by having all the delegates mail in their votes for nomination. The convention would be even more of a pep rally than usual, but that's about it.

For those of us that would like to see the Republican Party run a conservative candidate in the 2004 presidential election this might be our chance to get our foot in the door.
Let's find a conservative candidate to run in the California Republican primary.

What's the latest on this? Are the Dems going to make a fool of themselves by trying to keep Bush off the ballot in these states?
