[history]
BAGHDAD -- The pop, pop, pop of sporadic gunfire has drawn the attention of Sgts. Daniel Osborne and Cyrus Field.
Responding to persistent Iraqi attacks on a nearby U.S. military compound, the Army snipers have taken positions on the roof of a nearby abandoned building to wait for the right moment to lock on their targets.
For them and other sniper teams lurking in Baghdad, a successful mission often ends with a ferocious craaaaack! And so it would be on this night.

It's my guess that many of the "Iraqi shooters" are Iranians there to disrupt our efforts. Our snipers will take care of this type problem, as described.

And Syrians, and Palestinians (is there really such a thing?), and Egyptians, and Libyans, and a dozen other misplaced nationalities with a misguided hatred of the Great Satan...

As to style, this piece read more like Parade or some other newspaper insert.

Of course, when it comes to sniping, I note that our military is tends to be a bit unilateral and heavy-handed:
In Gulf War I, our "#2 Son"'s 82nd Airborne unit advanced to the Euphrates near An Nasiriyah.
He related an incident where they received incoming fire from an Iraqi sniper concealed in the trees along the river.
When I asked how they dealt with the sniper in the trees, he replied, "Trees? What trees...?"

I wouldn't call this heavy handed. It's pretty discriminating to let a bunch of people fire off guns in the air and pay them no mind, while shooting only people who have been shooting at you.
How many American police would be so tolerant?

Lighten up! '-)
I was sharing the humor of American firepower: to take out one sniper, they just took down the entire tree line... '-}
Not too funny to the tree-huggers, though, I'll wager...;-)
