I think Rumsfield is smart and a great Secretary of Defense. He has stepped on some toes and doesn't suffer fools gladly.

White was not only over his head, but anyone who was as politically inept as to allow the 'Crusader memo' to get traced right back to him has no business at that level.

I worked as a Systems Engineer on Crusader as my civilian job (I'm part time Guard). Believe me, it deserved to be cancelled on mismanagement and smoke and mirrors alone.

Fred, you're starting to sound like someone who might have had his toes stepped on during some of these reforms.

Watch what he says.

He says nothing.

You're intelligent; watch and learn.

"Asked whether he would seek White's resignation, Rumsfeld replied, "No, my goodness, no.""

That would make rummy a two-faced jackass. A typical politician who smiles at your face and kicks you in the ass. An untrustworthy jerk.

"after this brilliant campaign, "

We clobberd an enemy that, for the most part, refused to fight. That is a "brilliant" victory??

Notice he said that a year ago. Something might have changed. Or, the "unnamed sources" might be mistaken.

MEG,
Refer above, you are going to go around in circles, banging your head against a wall. This isn't a serious intellectually based point.

Rummy is a show hound. How many executives can spend two hours each day giving press briefings on national TV?

A typical politician who smiles at your face and kicks you in the ass.

If he smiles at you in front of the cameras, and press, then kicks you in the ass in private, you should thank him. It certainly could be worse....

A leader congratulates his men in public and chastises them in private.

No claim here to be any sort of analyst of weapons systems, but one question just screams to be asked:

'In what sort of even marginally possible war scenario in the next decade would heavy artillery be either a useful or a decisive factor?'

Perhaps my imagination is too limited, but I can't conceive of such a scenario, and certainly not of one in which the next generation of UAVs and related devices could not achieve the same results, at least as efficiently, and a d*mned sight less expensively.

refused to fight. That is a "brilliant" victory

Frankly that is a sick stab in the back of the hard working men that not only organized this so well that you can think it was so easy, but fought it on the ground against non convential forces. Make your point to the 127 dead's family members.

Oh yes, the Sec. of DEFENSE, during a war , shouldn't ever hold daily press briefings...in your oh so " brilliant " ( NOT ! ) estimation. Right, okay, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ...ROTFLMSO

As I said:

"I worked as a Systems Engineer on Crusader as my civilian job (I'm part time Guard). Believe me, it deserved to be cancelled on mismanagement and smoke and mirrors alone."

Indirect Fire is, and always has been, the #1 killer on the battlefield--the difference is that the fires are no longer necessarily Field Artillery because of the great expanses of the new battlespace.
