Jack Kemp is on Hannity and Colmes critizing Newt Gingrich for criticizing Colin Powell. Jack claims that Newt's statement plays into the hands of Daschle. Jack thinks that Newt's opinion was poorly timed. Newt thinks that we should have been tougher with our diplomacy, and I see nothing wrong with that.

Absolutely correct. Powell is playing good cop and he's got everyone fooled except you and me. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Powell helped Newt write his speech. If I'm correct watch for a few other Republicans to start talking about reforming State and then finally Powell will come out and announce his reforms at state. Kemp is just out of the loop. He'll get a call tonight from the Whitehouse telling him to shut up and go away, which he will quietly do.

Once Powell realized they were screwing him over, he purposely stopped diplomacy and I can't blame him at that point.

I agree with you...to a point.

Don't forget---Powell was the force in the administration behind going to the UN....yet he failed to deliver.

And, Powell's organization also failed to secure Turkey's cooperation.

While I don't disagree with Newt's conclusion that the State Department needs to catch up with today's world; I disagree with Newt's timing and choice of words.

Newt's statements neither helped the administration nor did they advance his goals.

I think Newt is being prompted by the Whitehouse to call for the reformation of State at this time. Why? Because the failure of State and the success of the Pentagon is abundantly clear to everyone. Now is the time to reform State while the public sees the obvious need for it. Notice that Newt did not criticize Powell, only the State Department itself. There will also be alot of house cleaning going on in the Pentagon. The Secretary of the Army got the ball rolling today by resigning. More of Rummy's enemies will follow shortly.

By the way I got a magazine in the mail today called "Rising Tide" The Official Magazine of the Republican National Committee. It asks that we all attempt to register 5 new Republican voters for 2004. The problem with that is that every person I know is either already a Reppublican...Democrat...or Hardcore refusul to vote.

I don't consider Kemp a RINO because of his strong unwavering support of tax cuts (the most important defining issiue to me). However, he does fall on the more Pro-Palestinan/Arab, more critical of Israel side of the GOP (where Bush 41, James Baker, Eagleburger, Chuck Hagel, etc. are). It seems that's where this debate lies, the more Pro-Israel you are, the less you support the UN and "diplomacy." I'm with Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Gingrich here.

That said I admire Powell (and Kemp). I'm glad Powell has a voice in this administration. I'm just grateful that Dubya has the final say. We can have divergent opinions without eating each other alive. There are just not enough "perfect Republicans," (those that agree with me on virtually every issue), to keep us in a ruling majority. Since our President is one of those IMHO, I can tolerate some dissent within our ranks with a smile. After all, it is Bush 43 making the final call.

DoD has won a massive victory in Gulf War II and Rumsfeld is trying to shape our new foreign policy along the following interrelated points:

1. Greater independence for exercise of US power
2. Less reliance on allies
3. Scaling-back of superfluous forward deployments, such as those in Korea and Saudi Arabia
4. Ability to deal with crises rapidly and disengage just as rapidly

This may be a far cry from the utopian vision of changing the world in the US image that some conservatives hope for. But in adjusting to the new realities and dynamics of world affairs, it's exactly what America needs: An overall streamlining of our international presence that facilitates independent US action and minimizes the need for "allies", whether for political support or military bases. It's actually a well-calculated design to achieve future objectives at the smallest possible cost in diplomatic fallout. Obviously there won't be too much diplomatic fallout if America weren't so dependent on foreigners' good will in the first place.

Yep, he's Barbara's son alright. Luckily, he's not much like his father, but much more like Reagan. Bush 41 was a huge disappoinment, Bush 43 has lived up to all my expectations and then some. These are the kind of Republicans we need out front.
