Conservative analyst Ann Coulter speaks to students

Conservative political analyst Ann Coulter, brought to the University as a guest of student government, called liberals "traitors" in front of a packed room of students in the Memorial Union on Wednesday.

More than 75 students turned out for her speech entitled "Liberalism & Terrorism: Different Stages of the Same Disease."

Associated Students of ASU, ASU College Republicans and Clare Booth Luce Policy Institute sponsored the author and conservative columnist's visit.

Coulter said the Democrats asked for too much evidence of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction before invading Iraq.

"There would have to be a mushroom cloud over Manhattan" before the Democrats would have committed to sending troops to Iraq, Coulter said.

Coulter also called for racial profiling of Muslims to ward off future terrorist attacks. She said Muslim extremists were responsible for all terrorist attacks during the past 20 years.

"When there is a 100 percent chance, it ceases to be a profile," Coulter said. "It is a description of a suspect."

Political science junior Alex Berkman said Coulter's political opinions "are the most naive and self-serving" he has ever encountered.

"Blaming liberals for terrorism is half-true," Berkman said. "But conservatives have happily sat by and supported terrorist regimes. Has she forgotten [former U.S. President Ronald] Reagan's support for the death squads in Guatemala?"

When asked about Reagan's support of the Mujahideen, a violent Afghan military force that fought the Soviet Union, Coulter said the United States "had bigger fish to fry back then."

"We allied with a lot of unsavory characters to defeat the Soviet Union," Coulter said.

Christina Corieri, vice president of the ASU College Republicans, said she hoped students heard "another viewpoint" by listening to Coulter.

"There have been several liberal teach-ins in the past few months on campus," Corieri said. "We wanted to bring a conservative view on campus."

Coulter also said the "liberal media," such as MSNBC, CNN and The Washington Post, have misrepresented her in the past.

"Never believe anything I am alleged to have said unless it's in a book or a column or you've heard me say it."

Preaching to the choir alert: And I wonder how many times the campus paper labeled those speakers "liberal analysts."

Ann brings up a key point when dealing with Lefties. Anything that occured before the fall of the Soviet Union must be viewed through the lens of the Cold War against the Soviets. We did get in bed with some unsavory characters in order to overcome a truly dangerous, evil adversary. This is no reason to give them a "pass" now.

I'm surprised to see this here. A friend of mine, who goes to ASU and rooms with the president of the college Republicans, did all of the driving for her yesterday - picked her up at the airport, took her to campus and drove her to the restaurant where they all ate dinner as a group. He said she was very witty and nice.
