Indonesia: Acting terror Jemaah Islamiyah leader caught

INDONESIAN police were last night interrogating a new batch of terror suspects, including a man they say was chosen to take over Jemaah Islamiyah, the al-Qaeda-linked group blamed for last year's deadly Bali bombings.

Police said some of the men had admitted involvement in other bombings and were plotting new attacks, possibly ahead of national elections next year.

"They are under interrogation at the moment," Chief Detective Lieutenant General Erwin Mapasseng said.

Indonesia, the most populous Muslim nation, is under pressure to crush Jemaah Islamiyah and reaffirm its commitment to the US-led war on terror after its vehement opposition to the war in Iraq.

A series of raids in the past week uncovered bomb-making materials and resulted in 18 arrests.

Among those netted was Abu Rusdan, a Muslim preacher who was allegedly Jemaah Islamiyah's acting chief. Detectives say he took control on the orders of Abu Bakar Bashir, the group's alleged founder who was arrested late last year and went on trial in Jakarta on Wednesday.

A bomb exploded yesterday morning behind the UN headquarters in Jakarta. No one was hurt in the blast, which damaged a bridge next to the UN mission.

Central Jakarta deputy police chief Ricky Wakano had no details of who was behind the bombing.

Rusdan was yesterday being transferred under tight security from his hometown of Kudus in East Java to Jakarta for questioning, Lt-Gen Mapasseng said.

Police now have 32 suspects in custody for the Bali attacks.

Many are former students or supporters of Bashir, including three who were picked up in the latest raids.

Several are soon to face court under new tough anti-terror laws.

Lt-Gen Mapasseng said some of the suspects had admitted their involvement in several other bombings, including a 2000 blast outside the Jakarta home of then-Philippine ambassador Leonides Caday, who was badly injured.

They also admitted links to several blasts at shopping malls.

Bashir has not been directly linked to the Bali attacks which killed 202 people.

Bashir went on trial accused of ordering a series of deadly bomb attacks against churches in 11 towns and cities on Christmas Eve, 2000, that killed 19 people.

Prosecutors say the bombings were designed to terrorise Indonesia's Christian minority in the hope of destabilising the country.

They say his ultimate aim was to overthrow the government and set up an Islamic state across much of South-East Asia.

If convicted, he could be imprisoned for life.
