Arizona Republic Columnist says, The Arizona Republic only provides one-sided coverage
PHXnews ^ | 4/24/03 | Craig J. Cantoni

Posted on 04/24/2003 1:57:51 PM PDT by MickeysHangover

Cantoni Writes:

Nothing works with Robbie, Chip and Chris. I've tried being nice, I've tried appealing to their professional pride, and I've tried reminding them of what is taught in journalism school about balanced reporting -- to no avail. They just keep cranking out their one-sided coverage of public policy issues.

Who are Robbie, Chip and Chris? They are journalists for a big-city daily with a circulation of over 500,000.

They recently co-authored an above-the-fold, front-page story on the proposal of state Republican leaders to close a state budget deficit. The name of the state is irrelevant, as most states in the nation have the same problem. The name of the broadsheet also is irrelevant, as most big-city newspapers follow the same tired formula.

Like most reporters, Robbie, Chip and Chris began their story on the correct journalistic note. They quoted both Republican and Democratic legislators. But then their coverage went off-key, as it often does.

They proceeded to quote left-leaning organizations, people on the public dole and college professors on the public payroll about the Republican plan to close the budget gap -- as if these sources do not have an ax to grind and are representative of the general population. They did not quote conservative organizations or taxpayers who are fed up with what they see as high taxes and profligate state spending.

I said it before and I'll say it again, The AZ Republic reporters should have flunked journalism 101 as how they report is not (was not) how reporting is taught.

I cancelled the paper for this very reason of one-sided coverage on so many issues as well as the fact that they seem to have a lovefest going with the newly do it my way or hit the highway governor.

I'd cancel the Tennessean (Nashville) if I could afford a laptop and wireless net connection - can't get this clunky thing in the bathroom.

Wow, this is personally offensive for the Republic. Hopefully it gets back to them.

I don't believe most liberals in the news have any comprehension they are liberal. (Like Goldberg explained)This really hits these 3 personally between the eyes. Might make a difference.

Thanks for the ping. You know what's funny? When I was discussing with my mom what I could do with my Poly Sci degree, she mentioned I could be a political analyst or write for a newspaper. I told her that most newspapers are too liberal for my own good and I would hate it. She said that the Az Republic wasn't liberal. I don't actually read it that much, but I knew better.

What's really sad is that a very conservative state has a liberal newspaper "representing" their ideas. I've never understood how the citizens could let that happen. Such is life.

dittomom, though you might want to see this.

Where did she (Janet) ever get Kris Mayes from? I know she used to work for the AZ Republic but what persuaded Janet to hire her.............Seriously, I'd like to know who escorts Janet to the affairs she must attend (dinners and such).

The Arizona Republic circulation is now about 430,000 and despite the increase in population in Arizona apparently continues to drop.

The Arizona Repugnant, as you so aptly describe it, has a tough time ennumerating its circulation. In April 2000 it claimed it had 438,000 subscribers, and then in August (when no one bothers to read a newspaper, it's too damned hot) claimed it had 476,000 subscribers. This year it is difficult to tell whether they have 440,000 or 480,000 subscribers (or whether they are telling the truth at all). Gannett really is a lousy operation, and would better serve the public by publishing a paper full of ads and omitting news reports.
