(Hartford-AP, Apr. 21, 2003 8:03 PM) _ Same-sex marriage could boost tourism in Connecticut by bringing couples seeking to wed.
That's according to a study by the state Office of Legislative Research and reported yesterday by The New York Times.
The study found that same-sex civil unions have helped tourism in Vermont and could do the same for Connecticut.
Civil unions in Vermont are legal. But an effort to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples and establish a domestic registry system was rejected April Ninth in the Connecticut General Assembly's Judiciary Committee.
The state's Office of Fiscal Analysis estimated that a civil-union law would draw about eight thousand tourists in the first year to participate in ceremonies.
The Vermont Tourism Data Center does not figure profits from ceremonies involving same-sex unions. Authors of Connecticut's report used estimates from Vermont innkeepers and added and multiplied those numbers to calculate a corresponding impact on Connecticut.
The report says tourism would be boosted by nearly ten million dollars in lodging and related spending for same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Good point AR. Child prostitution comprises something like 5% of the GDP of Thailand. Now that's a tourism policy. /sarcasm

Can these people really be this stupid or is this just a lame attempt to justify the unjustifyable?

What a lame-brained way to calculate economic impact. They completely disregard the rest of the economy (let alone just the rest of the tourism side of the economy).
Three very real variables left out:
1) The fact that many same-sex couples RAN to Vermont to take advantage of a unique law. Future projections are not likely to match the past.
2) The economic impact of conservative-minded families NOT coming to the state and those who decided to move as a result of their idiocy.
3) The demographic of same-sex couples still wanting find a place for their union will have to be SHARED with Vermont. At best, CT should plan for no more than half of the "economic impact" they assumed for VT.

Gee, I lived in Connecticut until 2000. This is one more reason to be happy to be out of there. Governor Rowland would endorse human sacrifice if the Planned Barrenhood crowd would send more campaign money and it might even improve tourism (LOL).

Gee, I lived in Connecticut until 2000. 2000?...I left for good when the RINO WeikerWanker ran for governor on the promise of NO STATE INCOME TAX, and installed one 6 months later!...That was the last straw for me.

That makes you a lot smarter than I was. I stayed to fight him and his putrid and corrupt income tax and all we got was John Rowland.
