Poor Sean Hannity

Poor Sean Hannity

Sean Hannity, a radio talk-show host and Fox News whiner, has a one-rut mind. Every criticism or dissent, no matter what the subject, the topic or the source, is a left-wing attack against his hero, George W. Bush.

Well, what can you expect from an immature groupie? Every time he tries to think, his face reflects the pain of the effort. But he really showed his emptiness recently when he said that criticism of the United States failing to guard the Iraqi National Museum was — you guessed it — just left-wing soreheads who are mad that President Bush's war has been so successful.

Give me a break. That museum is one of the five greatest museums on Earth. It contained treasures that are the heritage of mankind. There are 140,000 U.S. military personnel in Iraq. We've protected all the oil fields, north and south. Do you really believe we couldn't have spared two fire teams to guard the irreplaceable artifacts of the beginnings of Western civilization? Of course we could have. Somebody just goofed.

This is not a left/right, liberal/conservative issue. It's not a question of patriots versus traitors, as the morons among the neoconservative crowd try to paint every human being who refuses to click his heels and salute their guru, Richard Perle, and their emperor, George Bush. This is a cultural issue. Three great treasures — the museum, the National Library and the largest collection of Koranic writings in the world — were looted and burned. Since we had destroyed the Iraqi government, it was our responsibility to protect them.

I don't blame President Bush. I'm sure he's unaware of their existence. After all, he brags about not reading. But what would we say if the crowds who have rioted in Washington in the past had been allowed to loot and burn the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress? Do you think we would have accepted an excuse that there weren't enough cops to protect those two treasures?

One hates to disillusion the permanently adolescent among us, but this tiny sliver of life in which we are participating is a dot on a long line of human civilization. One day, we will be as forgotten as the Assyrians, and hopefully some museum will have artifacts from our brief stay on the stage of history.

There is a definitely a whiff of anti-intellectualism — so characteristic of fascist states — in the air. Beware of bully boys who worship the military and scoff at museums and libraries. Beware of people whose limited brains see everyone as either an ally or an enemy. Beware of people who can't tell the difference between patriotism and military conquest. Beware of people so stupid and ignorant that they accept anything and everything the political and the media demagogues tell them.

Thomas Jefferson, who would have been outraged by the loss of the museum and the library, said, "Those who expect to be ignorant and free expect what never was and never will be." Amen cubed.

I'm no longer concerned about liberals or conservatives, leftists or rightists. I just pray to God for a non-ideologue with a three-digit IQ. If we don't elevate the level of intelligence and integrity of our government, we are going to end up floating on the cesspool of history.

As for anyone being disappointed that the war was conducted rapidly and successfully, that's bull. I was opposed to the war, but I'm damned glad it was quick and there were as few casualties as there have been. Every anti-war person I know of or have read feels the same way. You have to be a really sick puppy to imagine that anyone would want to see Americans die just because they disagree with the policy that put them in harm's way. Let me spell it out for the mentally impaired: People are anti-war because they do not wish to see anyone die — our soldiers, their soldiers, our civilians or their civilians. Anti-war is pro-life.

Now just remember that a few short months ago, everyone on Free republic loved this guy.

A few short months ago? Hogwash. Reese went completely off his nut about 3 years ago, and everybody except the lunatic fringe around here noticed and backed away slowly.

Jay Leno said if the soldiers have to return the money they found, then let Exxon also return the oil they found there! :-)

In wars, looting, and raping is common by the concoring force. We are above that, I hope?

Our military bent over backwards to avoid bombing the mosques, in a move clearly calculated to fight a politically correct war.

We in America were sold this war as a necessary war to prevent terrorism and find WMD. Good enough. I'll buy that. But then they go and name the war "Iraqi Freedom" which clearly indicates that they are playing a "PC" game and by also giving massive effort to avoid bombing the mosques, its clear they are giving "winning the hearts and minds" of the Iraqis (at least the Moslem Iraqis) a high priority.

So, by a measure of their own goals they made a mistake by not immmediately securing the museums and the library, because even if the looting of treasures was already done at that point, they would know and have clear knowledge of that fact. By waiting until days after "liberation" the cat was already out of the bag. Instead of making a big display of pulling down the largest Saddam statue in Baghdad, those troops could have been at the Museum, because that would have been more in keeping with the politically correct goals they clearly had set. You see my point?

So, don't rag on me. I'm not the one who chose to fight this war in a "politically correct" fashtion. I had nothing to do with it. I am just responding to how our own government fought it, and critiquing one aspect of it.

You are evidently one of those people who think that if you don't swalllow everything the government says, you aren't a good little conservative. Sorry but I don't think that way. I read extensively and I form my own opinions.

You have a right to your opinion and I respect that, but don't treat me like I'm the enemy just because I happen to disagree with you.

IIRC, when the 'intifada' began (in late 2000?) was when reese began to write more about the middle east, which is where his opinion differs from a large % of FR readers and conservatives in general (the difference being that he apparently abhors israel, and all things israeli). On domestic stuff he is as or more conservative than many on this forum.

He has been critical of the Bush admin on a number of things, but as I understand the patriot act at present, such criticism is still permitted.

There is a lot of this going around on FR now. It is quite bizarre, though I guess it should give some insight into how a populace can be indoctrinated and mobilized to do nearly anything, given enough time and pressure.

I disgree with the whole concept that they are lost, or that this was a great museum. Almost every peice will be found. They will even show up in a London or NY museums.

you totally buy into [Reese's] entire premise.

No, I don't. Read my comments on this thread, and you'll understand that.

Nor do I buy into Hannity's premise that "a bunch of stupid clay pots" are not worth worrying about. When Clinton was in office, we all (rightly) complained that his supporters saw every issue as a political battle--they'd rally to his side no matter the cause because they had to fight the "VWRC." Hannity is the mirror image of those F.O.B.'s. He sees everything in the narrowest political terms.

What if those terrorists started popping off priests in that church - would you be so willing to let them die in order to protect the building?

I honestly don't know. But I'll bet you that the priests would be willing to die to protect the place of Christ's birth. They live for the next world and would probably die the martyr's death.

Put the blame where it belongs - on the Iraqi people.

How many times in this thread have I said I don't blame the military? At least 3, I think.

I blame some Iraqis--specifically the ones who did the looting.

Almost every peice will be found.

They're starting to be retrieved even now. As I always said--thanks to OUR efforts. It also is becoming clear that the items were taken well before we arrived on the scene.

Don't expect those wringing their hands here over their proclaimed concern over priceless artifacts being lost to rejoice at their being found, however. Finding and restoring these items will send them into another sulk and seeking another avenue to attack the administration on.

Alan Colms is pulling him way down and yes, it does cross over to the radio program. Question. Why does he put so much trust in Hackworth.

Sean Hannity amazes me.

IMHO: he has very little talent, is a terrible interviewer, does nothing but lick Bush's boots...

yet he has a primetime TV slot and a radio talk show...

This author is right, to the extent that as soon as we entered Bahgdad we should have secured the museum...

An the embed reporter could report that the treasure had been looted prior to our arrival.

Again: Hannity is a whining boot licker, and we screwed up not getting to the museum sooner.

"big deal, so we broke a bunch of stupid clay pots."

I wonder if we got blamed when the Nazi's confiscated great works of art...

I think people are taking issue with the fact that you come across as if you think it's OK for people to blame Bush. (evidenced by the fact that in your mind, Hannity shouldn't take those people on - by taking them on, he's 'licking Bush's boots' or some such rot.)

Sounds like a pretty fair assessment of their criticism if you ask me.

I've been let down andembarassed by Hannity too many times to recount. Most recent; he had Diane Sawyer on to hock her Jessica Lynch interview on the network that feeds her and Hannity. Hannity's then current outrage was the memo and why the media elite were ignoring it. He had one of the media elite at hand and acted as if there were no memo story at all instead of saying "Diane, what's up with ABC ignoring the Dem Memo?" He played ABC's shill while Sawyer was the Dealer in a three card monte game.
