Bill Cosby wasn't always the affable family man that he plays on television.

Angered by taunts that he didn't do enough in the civil rights struggle, Cosby once sucker punched Tommy Smothers according to Gerald Nachmans new book.

Smothers recalls Cosby told him, 'Maybe I will give you a knock upside the head one of these days. I said, 'Yeah, go ahead and give it a try.'

A few weeks later Cosby made good on his threat when the two ran into each other at one of Hugh Hefners Playboy Mansion parties.

'I should have never turned my back on him,' Smothers said. 'He didn't have the b*lls to do it when I was looking.'

'He slipped behind Hugh Hefner and sucker punched me. He hit me right in the head with his fist.'

Smothers went down, the book reports, at which point Cosby began shouting 'Come onm I will kick your *ss!.'

the joke's on bill, now. saw his crusty mug on the front of a book in the humour section at the book store the other day. he looked worse than anemic. i laughed that he even put out a book.

Tommy Smothers would have to kill a bunch of kids to make me stop being a huge fan. I know he's a wise ass lefty, but he's just so damn funny. Or at least he used to be. He used to come on the old Tonight Show once in a while and say absolutely outrageous things. I think he once called somebody a "homo" and maybe even got sued.

I love listening to the old Smothers Brothers songs and routines.

Oh, and speaking of Cosby, go back and watch that film of his where he's just doing his stand up act (I can't remember the name offhand). There's a really eerie moment when he's talking about his son (then a little boy) and he bellows out "SOMEBODY'S GOING TO KILL THAT BOY!"

Originaly being from NYC, I knew several people who had regular contact with entertainers. They all said there were two SOB's that stood out WAY above all others:

-Bill Cosby
-Bob Hope

I also said "Bob Hope!"...but heard from several that he was THE WORST!

I've always really liked Bill Cosby and now that I've found out that he cold cocked one of the Smothers Brothers, I like him even more. Wish they had that on film cause I've wanted to deck either one of those self-important leftist pr***s since, oh, around 1968.

The Smothers have NOT changed, and they're very negative about Pres Bush. Nice to hear that Cosby hit him.

"GOD, I loved it. Listening to their routines gave me some of the funniest, most "laughingest" moments of my childhood. I still play their stuff today for my 8 year old daughter, who loves them just as much as I did. Now, on the other hand, my parents couldn't stand them.

Years and years and years ago I bought my son a LP of Cosby reciting his encounter with Carol Shelby and his new Cobra. "It was killing people and it was idling" He did the sound effects himself. God I wish I had a copy of that recording...

It's sort of sad to hear that about Bob Hope, since he's done so much for the deployed troops over the years. I'm not at all surprised about Camille Cosby, however. The USA Today Op-Ed piece written after the death of son Ennis was an extremely vicious attack on (White) America.
