Son of a diddly. If his information is credible and the weapons are in Syria then Hezbollah - a far more dangerous outfit than al-Qaeda - has them. As I've said on a number of occasions, the war was only the beginning of the beginning.

. As a result, most of the teams had done almost no weapons hunting until the fighting had largely concluded.
Nice to see major media showing common sense ! Confirmation of the death of Saddam & Sons would maybe loosen some lips too.

This one's worthy of being listed as Breaking News, as it's the first step toward a smoking gun.
Kudos to the military for putting a 3-day embargo on the story until its elements could be verified. That way, unlike the other ones that eventually didn't pan out, the entire story (hints and tips *and* the verification) could be put out there.
I have a feeling that this story was leaked out in a limited way, with limited information in the hope of getting other Iraqi scientists to come forward (making it clear that the scientist's name will be protected and implying that the scientist as well will be protected).

I couldn't tell whether Judith Miller was just being guarded -- the facts, nuthin' but the facts -- or was writing through clinched teeth, hating the implications of these findings.
I'll bet Howell Raines hated them even more...

Well the fact that Judith Miller is reporting this lends much credibility, she's been writing and investigating the subject for a good many years. I hope this gets the media attention it deserves, thanks for the post!

An amazing report, and it makes so much sense. I, too, am getting antsy over wanting the coalition to shout 'gotcha'. I feel a bit better now.

Hmmm? Since Hezbollah's main target for years has been Israel, this is not good - not good at all.
I keep thinking about Isaiah 17:1
If Hezbollah does have these chem/bio items, and they use them against Israel, we could see the fulfillment of that scripture.

The scientist also told American weapons experts that Iraq had secretly sent unconventional weapons and technology to Syria, starting in the mid-1990's, and that more recently Iraq was cooperating with Al Qaeda This has the ring of "telling 'em what they want to hear." As he himself says later, the program was "highly compartmentalized." This guy wouldn't know any more than he needed to know to make the brew. In fact the whole 'scientific' side of the show might not have known anything about what happened to the stuff after they made it. Saddam was so paranoid that the guys who were after him had guys after them.

The left-wing opposition has staked everything on our not finding WMD. I bet a few people are squirming right now. Of course, they'll just find something new to holler about.

The officials' account of the scientist's assertions and the discovery of the buried material, which they described as the most important discovery to date in the hunt for illegal weapons, supports the Bush administration's charges that Iraq continued to develop those weapons and lied to the United Nations about it. Finding and destroying illegal weapons was a major justification for the war. Hot damn! ... Now let's see the leftists eat their words again.

A scientist who claims to have worked in Iraq's chemical weapons program for more than a decade...<<< Lets put this guy in the Iraqi-scientist-witness- protection-program!
Just saw peice on MSNBC where the looters had broken open cases and cases (looked like maybe 500 or more) of AK47's and made off with them. An Iraqi hanging around the warehouse said he, "hoped they would be used to wage Jihad".
You know against who.....our guys and anyone cooperating with us - like this scientist.
So far we have beat the snot out of the Saddam's forces, the Baath party irregulars, and the Radical Muslim Islamists..
Now its time to break their backs!
