Two U.S. congressmen were in Syria on Sunday, and said President Bashar Assad told them his government will not give asylum to Iraqis wanted for war crimes and will expel any Iraqis who cross into Syria.
Reps. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., and Darrell Issa, R-Calif., were the first American officials to meet Assad since the recent escalation of U.S.-Syrian tensions.

For Christians among the American troops, Easter services were offered at
several sites where soldiers on patrol duty have been sleeping on the ground or
in vacated public buildings.
I got to see church services at the regular Catholic church in Baghdad on TV.
This Catholic church is located next door to a mosque.
The church service was packed
(500+ in attendance?). It was intereesting because males sat at the front of
the auditorium, females in the back part of the auditorium.
And at least the songs were sung in Arabic (AFAIK).

What business do these scoundrels have that allows them to go the Syria to meet with foreign leaders? I thought the Executive branch, and specifically the State Dept was in charge of foreign policy. Also, I assume the US tax payer is paying for their junket?

There are reports that Bashar al-Assad has been attempting reforms from within the old Baathist government for some time now, and Rep. Darrell Issa is hardly a scoundrel.

I thought the Executive branch, and specifically the State Dept was in charge of foreign policy. That's what the Executive branch wants people to think--it's called the Imperial Presidency. In reality, Congress is where the buck starts and stops, the people's representatives. We don't quite have a King George just yet.
