[history]
Jarrod Martin was repeatedly told to back away from a roaring fire in his apartment building, but the sight of his dog jumping up and down against a glass door in a room filled with smoke was too much, he said.

"Martin said, "People saw me and asked, 'Are you the guy that started the fire?' and I was like, 'No, I just rescued my dog,' and they asked, 'Then why are you in handcuffs?'"

The pet owner has the moral and legal responsibility to provide for the safety and well being of the animals in his care. There are arrests almost weekly now in the news of a pet owner charged with not providing proper care for his animals.
I would say asking and waiting 30 minutes for the FD to rescue the obviously threatened animal is proof he was trying to work within the system, the ultimate responsibility for the animal's well being was the owners, though.
He did what he had to do to secure his dog's safety.
You are right in that no one was endangered. The FD wanted to run the show and did not appreciate being upstaged. I have seen similar reactions when several departments/jurisdictions are trying to run an operation. Once a fire chief ran a Nat'l Guard road block saying they had no jurisdiction over him, big chase, wrecked car, etc.
I hope the dog owner gets a sensible judge, and the PD gets its ass chewed out.

Now dont be so hard on Mr. Bill . He did leave himself an out or 2 like using the word letter and the implied emotional conflict ~ " Tough Call " .
I'll call him by what he is and be done with it .

I can see the endangerment had they had to rescue the guy, but in this case no harm no foul. Leave the guy alone. A good scolding was all that was necessary.

"The idiot should be charged with reckless endangerment. He (the dog owner) could've been overcome by smoke which would have meant a firefighter would've had to risk his life to go in there and get him."
It's idiotic to arrest someone for not standing idly by and watching their dog die before their eyes. Disgrasiada.

Kudos on your comments especially this.
I believe in police, law and order; but I think we are living in very unusual times for America. Everyone is a "criminal" these days.
So true. We are all suspicious of one another... and encouraged to be even more so as the media places group against group and politicians use deceit, hyperbole and out and out treachery to force their agendas on the unwitting and unwilling masses.
Do nothing. We will take care of you.

Something is terribly wrong when decent Americans fear the police more than they do street thugs.

The homeowner in this case accepted the personal risk involved in rescuing his dog, knowing that the firefighters were busy looking for people. It was an apartment building, I don't think there would be an issue if it was his own home.
To: Fred Mertz
I'm surprised that the cops didn't shoot the dog after it was rescued. I share your surprise.

I had to restrain myself from saying what I really, really, wanted to call you. Anyone whom gets between me & mine when they are in danger are in for a world of instant hurt.

I wonder how long before the automatons come in and start giving us hell for not worshiping at the PC shrine of LEO heroism?
A few years ago, I had a friend who was dating a cop. He liked to regale us with tales of his and other LEO exploits. I earned a life long enemy when I told him there wasn't a damned thing he did to protect me or my family that I couldn't do for myself. He made her stop being a friend to me as long as they were dating, one of the reasons they split up.
Control freak? I'll let you decide.
Considering the time it would take for a cop to show up after a 911 call, I let him know the only reason I would call the local PD is to come out and clean up the mess after the danger was passed.

Lawson was asked what fire officials would have done if Martin had run to save his child from a burning building. ''That would be something that would be a split-second decision depending on the circumstances,'' she said. ''We don't draw lines. We are here for lives, period. If any situation proves safe, we would go in for a child, a dog, a pet, when the situation was safe enough.'' Depending on the circumstances? What????? What??? What??? so if a child is on the second story screaming and banging on glass, the side of the building/balcony isn't in flames and a pane of glass is the only thing that seperates that child from safety, breaking it wouldn't be safe enough circumstance for them? It's a no brainer.
I think these firefighters/police are furious because this rescue was caught on tape, exposing their incompetance and poor decision making skills. I saw a lot of firefighters and cops standing around not holding any hoses.

My point, which Bill understands, is that it wasn't a tough call for him, regardless of his public hand-wringing.
