Brrrr! Susan Sarandon gets used to being frozen out
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | April 18, 2003 | PHIL ROSENTHAL

If you don't like Susan Sarandon, maybe you will be cheered to learn she'll be stranded in Antarctica with cancer this weekend on CBS.

If you do like Sarandon, the good news is she gives a solid performance that elevates CBS' "Ice Bound: A Woman's Survival at the South Pole," an otherwise ordinary *** depiction of Dr. Jerri Nielsen's well-documented battle with breast cancer, isolation and the elements that's set for 8 p.m. Sunday on WBBM-Channel 2.

So it goes for Sarandon, an increasingly polarizing figure of late, left out in the cold by some for her anti-war stances.

First, the United Way of Tampa, Fla., canceled a fund-raising appearance she was to make last month, ostensibly because she flashed the peace sign as a presenter at the Academy Awards. The gesture upset some because they considered it a breach of decorum and upset others because it wasn't strident enough.

Then last week--shortly after Sarandon chatted with reporters on a conference call to promote "Ice Bound" that, as fate would have it, was conducted just hours after U.S. Marines helped topple that Baghdad statue of Saddam Hussein before the TV cameras--news broke that baseball's Hall of Fame had canceled a screening of "Bull Durham" that she and common-law husband/co-star Tim Robbins were to attend because of their tendency to speak out on political issues.

"We're issuing a statement today because there was supposed to be--well, I don't know--I can't go into this right now," Sarandon said cryptically at the time. "But, yes, there have been other things [besides the United Way incident] and more will come out today.

"Then there have been calls to boycott movies and things, which I think is just damaging in that it frightens other people. I don't ever remember being in a climate where people have been so afraid to even have a conversation about some of these issues, that people would be irate to have a healthy debate."

While maintaining she's "not a fan of Saddam Hussein," Sarandon reiterated that "to go to war because you're impatient is not a good reason" and warned that "the peace is not established. The invasion is over but those kids are going to be there for many years, and I guess we're focusing on Iran and Syria.

"The thing I want to focus on now," she said, "is making sure that the veterans of these wars and of wars past do not suffer from these budget cuts. ... Billions of dollars [are] being cut from this budget for veterans' health and benefits."

Seems I read here yesterday that the woman that Sarandon portrayed was upset with the movie, saying it was basically a BS treatment

Someone will have the link no doubt, I couldn't find it...

Let me refresh susan's memory.

Anita Bryant and OJ commercial.

Newt and his book deal.

Dr. Laura and her TV program.

Ward Connerly's lectures.

Ann Coulter at Cornell.....

The list goes on and on............

Excellent! Liberals are getting the same treatment they've dished out to conservatives for years and are finding it unpleasant! Well, I've always wanted to see them lowered down a notch or two. This is simply good education in better manners for our betters. Let's hope it rubs off on them the next time they decide they want to shut conservatives up. On the other hand if they do what they want to continue to do what they've done up til now, they'll find two can now play the game.

Yeah, it frightens people like Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins.

There is nothing in the Constitution that says anybody has to pay money to watch Susan Sarandon play-act.

Thank God. I’d move to China if there was.

Yes, the doctor on whom the story is based was very upset; said the movie trashed her.

I find it impossible to imagine having a "conversation" with Susan Sarandon or Tim Robbins (or a very long list of other liberals). An actual, civilized, conversation would be fine, but Verbal Bullying, where they talk and you listen, is much more their style.

Nothing in the Constitution says we have to listen to their opinions or watch their movies. If they think they can't earn a paycheck here, hey I'm all in favor of their moving to France.

You're right, liberals don't hold a conversation. They criticize, they nag, they bully, they lecture, and they preach - to the rest of us like we're too dumb to understand what they're saying. The last thing on earth they do is actually take the time to listen to what other people have to say.

Perhaps Ruth Bader-Ginsburg and Co. at the SCOTUS can find a "right to have your nutjob ideas accepted" in the Constitution and pull Mr. and Mrs. Sarandon's fat out of the fire here. I'm sure it's in there, you know.

Wait a minute! Names like Dr. Laura, Anita Bryant or Ann Coulter,,,,,,,do they mean anything; they had an opinion? They aren't even relevant, why would anyone care what they had to say?

We, the elite of Hollywood are the only relevant! (/sarcasm)

Oh, and if I remember correctly the libs were boycotting Mel Gibson's movie The Patriot 'cause young boys were shooting guns.

The problem is that they are used to having their way...like a spoiled child. When coming up against some resistance they cry no fair, no fair.

Quite comical.

Not so. The Secretary of Vetrans Affairs was just on C-Span two days ago refuting those charges of cuts in the Va budget. This is typical left wing BS.

I saw that too. The woman said the part Serandan is playing is not a true depiction of the woman who was standed and had to peform medical procedures on herself.

Where was Sarandon and Roberts defending John Rocker's "free speech" rights to express his point of view? Where has she been when conservatives in Hollywood have be ostracized?

If one says something stupid, the general public has a right to express their displeasure. Free speech cuts both ways.
